Will the Philips DVP642:
play avi files on a DVD? The manual only lists mpeg-4 and divx on CD-R and CD-RW.
pause or fast-forward avi files? The manual only lists pause and FF for DVD, VCD and CD.

Hi. First of all, you must know that avi is mpeg4... so, with DVP 642 player (I have the same, but the european modell DVP 630) is possible to play almost everything. Avi/ac3 or Avi/mp3 on CD or DVD as well... of course, the avis not bigger than 2GB.
Pause and fastfoward of course included.
Greetings! :)

I know avi is mpeg4 :)
Glad to hear this should work. I wonder why the manual doesn't list mpeg4 on DVD and doesn't list FF or pause for mpeg4

:)
AVI is not MPEG4... AVI is a container; it holds video and audiostreams together. MPEG4 is a video compression standard and you can indeed place MPEG4 streams in AVI. But there are lots of other types of video streams you can place in AVI too (VP6, WMV9, huffyuv, etc.)
This player will only play MPEG4 in AVI, not other types of video streams.
