reverse engineering a dvd

hi,
just curious if it is possible, & what you need to do to if so, to take the files off of a dvd and convert them back to a video and a audio stream.

I'n a bit confused by your question..
Do you mean anything else than what is usually done by backing DVD up?
By the use of software like DVD Decrypter, DGIndex/Decode, BeSweet, etc you do copy the contents off the disk, seperate streams and decode them.. :confused:

what i'd like to do for example is take a dvd i bought, use the vts
01_1,01_2,01_3 etc. files and get the movie back to video & audio streams. then i want to multiplex the streams back together and try to reencode the movie at a different screen resolution. not sure if this is possible or not---just a little experimentation!:D

for the basic streams this should be no problem, the only place i would expect problems is with menues if you want to keep them.
I'd look into the DVD and miniDVD threads (about half way down on the front page) and maybe the MPEG-1/2 threads just below. I don't backup to MPEG-2, but there definitely are people who do. Also it is probably a good idea to first read the backup to DVD guides (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdr-guides.htm), could save you a lot of thread searching..
