hello.. was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a stand alone dvd player that will play ....
xvid with ac3 or mp3
divx with ac3 or mp3
wmv
wma

also do most standalones play video files in any container, or just .avi, .mp3.... and how about .mpeg , .mpg, .mp2

also for most of my encodes i use auto gk to backup my dvd's
usig xvid with ac3 5.1, at a bit rate of 2000 for the video and 448 for the audio, just want to make sure the player i get can handle these bit rates burned to a dvd or a cd
here is a clip of a recent backup if any one wants to try it on their player xvid-ac3 clip (http://personal.180com.net/dreadycarpenter/post/xvid-ac3%205.1-test.avi)
thanks

Until now i have only seen one player that can not play xvid, thats the Sony 765. AC3 should be no problem.

Of course every player has some limitations with xvid.
ESS players dont like qpel and gmc
Mediatek players dont like gmc and packet bitstream with bvops>1
Sigma players dont like qpel and gmc

But if you have used AutoGk for encoding you should be safe.
Except you buy an ess based player and have not used the ESS option in AutoGk as some have problems with custom matrices.

And all should play .mpeg files also, except again the Sony.

so im checking out the RJ-1500DVXII on www.newwegg.com
it claims to play eaverything but does not specify if it will play ac3 in an .avi container, but does say it has a dts/ac3 decoder..

review quote

"Awesome player. Supports DivX 3/4/5, XviD and also MPEG files direct without making a VCD/SVCD version. AVI files with AC-3 codec, MP3-CBR and MP3-VBR are all supported. Tested AVI files with 1800kbps DivX 5.0.2 codec and 448Kbps AC-3 codec"

of course it will play ac3 on a dvd. but does that mean it will play ac3 in an avi or it will convert the mp3 to ac3 via digital out????

cheers

i've played a movie with xvid + ac3 in avi with my dvp-642 (harry potter rip, not my idea!)... of course, this player has the typical qpel and gmc limitations.

Thats not possible, it would need an ac3 encoder to do that.

From the description its just a typical ess based player, i cant see a reason why it should not play ac3 in avi.
