1st pass speed OK, but 2nd....

Helo friends:

I´ve been trying to encode some movies with GK 0.28.8 and xvid installed along ripack 1.8.

The source material is NTSC 29.97 interlaced, and when I encode, in the 1st pass, I always get around 35fps (P4-2.8Ghz HT), but when it comes to the 2nd pass the fps drops to 9fps. Any known reason for this?

Usually I do 2 cd rips, tomsmocomp for deinterlacing, quantization is mpeg and also using Global Motion Compensation, the rest is done accordingly doom9´s guide.

noobsaibot : when XviD makes its first pass, it automatically ( by default, you can change that behavior ) disables some options that are time consuming, and useless in the first pass : such options are VHQ settings, 4MV mode, trellis, chroma motion... VHQ4, for example, is four times slower than VHQ1.

ok, but this should drop the speed from 35 to 20/25 frames, not to 9

Huh ? 4 times slower means it takes 4 times more time to encode a frame, so the fps is divided by 4.

ok, in fact i use vhq1, max 2 sometime....

but we are talking about all of the features slowing it down. not just VHQ. so say VHQ divides your stuff by four then chroma motion by more, cartoon mode or whatever else dropping it more etc. the slowdown is an addition of all the settings you used. Try posting your settings so we can tell you exactly what is causing the major slowdown. If you have any other doubts just hit the default settings button and try encoding see if it goes faster or slower.

Not really on the subject but you should use GK 0.32b.

I haven´t used "full quality first pass", and the setting for both passes are the ones listed on Doom9 guide about xvid 1.0 and GK, i.e.:

Quantization: Mpeg (used 2 cd-rip)
Quartel Pixel: Yes

Advanced:

Motion Search Precision: 6
VHQ mode: 1
Use Chroma Motion: Yes

All other options are default.

Manao: How can I change that behavior, you mentioned?

I believe by checking the "Full Quality First Pass" option. This is useless unless u also uncheck "Discard 1st Pass". This will give u a straight quant 2 (or whatever min Q is) Xvid file IIRC.

Of course lordadmira is right but this would make the first pass as slow as the second rather then speeding up the second pass.
