Somebody told me I should use DGMPGDec, AviSynth and VDubMod to convert VOB2AVI. But why so complicated when I just can open a VOB file and convert to video? Why are the other two programs necesary?

vob already is video... it totally depends on what you want as an endresult...
it has turned out that the process of using dgindex/dvd2avi just for indexing purposes, avisynth for framesserving and virtualdubmod for encoding yields more quality than letting dvd2avi do the whole process... furthermore you have far more control of your encode. dvd2avi is simply not up to todays standards, encoding wise...
if doing all this manually is not the way you want to do your encodes (right now), i'd recommend you to try AutoGK for starters... it pretty much automates the process and makes it worlds easier!

PS: linking to the thread you mentioned wouldn't have been a bad idea... also you could have just created another post in this original thread...

I think I've recommended the following to you at least twice before:
:readguid:
You might find what you're looking for in there. Start by clicking HERE (http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm).
I've already recommended an application that is one-button-press, AutoGK, to create DivX or XviD .avi files. Mmore than once, I think. And, as I've mentioned before, there are step by step guides and tutorials.
I don't know VOB2AVI, so I can't answer your question as to the specific process you're questioning. I doubt it came from one of our active members. Try Doom9's guides. They're very easy to follow.

please try also DVX (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=78421). Recently a user reported (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=84124&highlight=headache) a headache from only looking at it, I hope you don't share the same fate :)
