Virtual Dub to TMPGEnc

Hi everyone,
This is more of a technique question.
I have a captured AVI, my ultimate destination is DVD. Why would someone fileserve the file from Virtual Dub to TMPGEnc as opposed to just doing what you need to do in Virtual Dub, saving the AVI, then doing the encoding in TMGPEng?

Saving diskspace. If you frameserve, you will have only two files on your disk: the original captured avi and the final mpeg2 file.

If you save first to AVI, you will have to have the file on your disk for a third time. Also, if you want to avoid any quality loss this intermediate AVI should be uncompressed = huge.....

This is the idea behind all frameserving.

I just got a huge drive, so the KISS principle is more my concern than drive space is.

Can I also assume then that I can go right from captured huffyuv compressed AVI directly to TMPGEnc as long as I don't care about editing/cleaning up?

Seriously, if you simply want to bulk convert without any processing you can do that. There is just one catch: TMPGenc requires RGB input, while huffy is YUV colorspace. (read the Capture guide and faq files for the meaning of that)

To make a long story short, when you open up a YUV colorspace file in TMPGenc, windows will take care of the conversion for you. Unfortunately, depending on which codec does this job on your particular system, the conversion may lead to shifts in the luma range (brightness).

I would advise you to install avisynth and use that to convert to rgb24 just to be sure.
