DVD Decrypter can rip just the audio track from the dvd, saving lots of space on your HD using stream selection. Then, BeSweet can convert the ac3 or PCM audio directly to whatever format you are looking to have. check the guides here on doom9.org

thanks. I'm using that software with no problem. I use Ac3tool to convert the files to wav files but the audio is really bad. I was wondering if there is another free software that would do this in one step rather than 2. I have see few that work that way but they are not free.

like pacohaas said, besweet will do the conversion in one step and you dont have to use ac3tool. or else, i would recommend using headac3he if you are working with ac3 files.

Use the software #1 DVD Audio Ripper.
This will do a very good job.

why would you use a program that costs $29 to do something of lower quality??

@lavinh: be careful of rule#5 here

You could use a program called Ufony - it costs about £20 it will convert the audio file from your DVD to a wav file. Ufony can handle vob files of any size so you can rip the DVD in 1 large Vob file so you don't get any breaks in the audio.

yes you could but the point is, why would you do any of that when you can do the same thing(perhaps with even better quality) for free?

One of the reasons I like Ufony is it does it very quickly and very simple to use.......and to be honest I can't always get my head around how to use some of the free software.

fair enough, but isn't that the whole point of doom9's guides and this very forum? to learn these types of things. Otherwise, the home page would just be an online store where you could buy all the shareware that does the same stuff as the free projects.

True - I think it must be me - I spent a few hours yesterday trying to convert an mpeg2 audio file to an mp3 file using besweet and eventually gave up after several pc lock ups......even browsing the manuals didn't seem to enlighten me.........:-(

Hi again - I found this article on line which may help in your quest to extract the audio from your DVD - it shows how to set up dvd2avi to extract the audio. This method sounds similar to what Ufony does but it's free - I suppose in highsight I should have tried this myself.....

 I refer again to my first reply here. Use DVDDecrypter's IFO mode to do stream processing to demux and rip the audio at the same time. In the prefs there is an option of how to split files if you wanted to split chapters or not.

check out doom9's guide (http://www.doom9.org/dvddec.htm) on dvddecrypter for pretty pictures and words. I just skimmed it and it even shows how to demux an audio track.

Then use BeSweet(with the GUI!) and follow the right guide (http://www.doom9.org/audio-guides.htm) for your needs. If you get an error with BeSweet, come here post the logfile and lets figure it out.

Pacohaas,

Could you go into a little more detail on how to split chapters when demuxing in stream processing? I've looked at the guide and see there are a number of choices under "Create Additional Files" but I'm unclear as to what these various options do. I will be using BeSweet to convert the 2ch audio stream to a WAV file that can be played on a CD player. It would be great if the originating VOB could be demuxed into multiple 2ch streams, one for each chapter in the VOB. The only way I see to do this right now is to demux one chapeter at a time with Decrypter, which is a bit tedious. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

HDD

Im also trying to do the same thing - rip the ac3 audio streams from a dvd i have and convert to an audio cd. I too am going through alot of pain in the process! I used Smartripper to ripp each "track" once as a vob and once as an ac3 file. after that i used besure to convert the vob or ac3 to a dolby digital wav file. the file seems to be an actual dolby digital wav file but when i play it on my pc all i hear is static. where am i going wrong here?

sorry, i've been gone for a while

@Harddrive: in the settings, IFO mode tab, File splitting:by chapter. then when you rip, go to the stream processing and just select the audio and make sure to check to demux it so it makes ac3 files for each chapter.

then use the BeSweetGUI to convert it to the format you need, with audio cd's make sure you use SSRC and downsample to 44.1
