Tried for an answer in miniDV Forum. It was suggested that XBox might play the AVI files.

I capture AVI-type 2 to HDD and burn the files to DVD as my backup. The files are large and contain PCM audio (about 20 minutes per DVD disc). The Philips DV642 will read the disc, show the index but complains about codec and will not play the AVIs. The only compressor used in creating the AVIs is the native DV 5:1 from the cam. Also, which file system should I choose for the DVD - ISO or UDF? Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

I would not have thought so.

DV video runs at around 225MB per min or 3.75MB per sec. That's a lot of data.

Besides that even the most advanced chip-sets are only able to decode Mpeg1, 2, 4 and WMV streams.

I can confirm however, that it is possible to play such streams with an speedy PC an Xcard and TVedia software ;)

Cheers

Thanks PAL. I will look at compressing for play in DV642 using perhaps MPEG-4. When do we approach light speed?!!
