View Full Version : Final DVD size too large ?

Hi,
I'm using DIF4U, BatchCCEWS & ScenAid - recompressing menu's using NUMenu4U; but sometimes the amount of output data seems to exceed what can actually fit on a DVD..
Using ImgTool to create an ISO gave for example a file of 4.719.239.168 bytes
This is more than I actually can burn onto a DVD :scared: - so somewhere in the loop there is a problem setting the right bitrate... Is there a way to adjust the estimated max-size of the DVD (like in ReAuthorist); or is it possible to have BatchCCEWS launched, but not started - so that I can trim the bitrate manually before starting re-compression ??
Regards

Hi,
actually, there is no bitrate calculation in ScenAid. To launch BatchCCEWS instead of starting it automatically, you must click in DIF4U the Global Options menu. Then "Post Processing->Lauch External App->DoCCE4U (Open Automatically)".
You can tick the "ReAuthorist (Open Automatically) [0.6.0.9+]" option too (only if you have demuxed by PGC) and generate the batch processing file with it by pressing the "Encode" button. It will load DoCCE4U. After the job list appears completely you can close DoCCE4U. Then run BatchCCEWS and load ReAuthorist_DoCCE.txt or ReAuthorist_NewDoCCE.txt ("File->Load File List").
You should be able to adjust the bitrate like you want now.

You can also adjust the final DVD-r size in Doitfast4u.
If you open up the DVD bitrate calculator in Doitfast4u the "Final Size" / DVD-r size is stored and used in the demux as well..
I usually leave mine set to DVD-r Safe - 10
(Bitrate calcs in ScenAid are in progress btw)

or is it possible to have BatchCCEWS launched, but not started - so that I can trim the bitrate manually before starting re-compression ?? my personal preference is to run the apps:
NUMEN4U > DIF4U > SCENAID > BATCHCCE > BATCHIFOUPDATE.
once DIF4U has finished processing, i manually open Scenaid with the option 'Open BatchCCE' selected. once i point Scenaid to the demux directory it analyses all the files then opens BatchCCE (with the correct chapter points). i can then manually check the encoder settings (particularly useful for PAL projects) and at this stage you could adjust the average bitrate for any of the files befor encoding. hit go, and once its finished Scenaid opens Scenarist and imports all of your assets for you.
couldnt be easier.

@jel
In your process you said
adjust the average bitrate for any of the files before encoding
How do you calculate how much adjustment needs to be made. Is there any set formula to calculate bitrates that you use?
Thanks,

amit,
well its all a case of mathematics .... but to tell you the truth i am often lazy and use ReAuthorist's bitrate calculator to estimate the change in bit-rate. i then apply the variation relative to the bit-rates given by DIF4U.
mind you ... it is such a rare occurance that i find a need to adjust bit-rates that i feel this method is suitable for my needs.

@jel,
Thanks for the info. Is there a way to specifying the size of the disc in DIF4U so that I have a margin and the disc does not overshoot the maximum allowed limit.
I know in DIF4U there is a calculator where you can specify the disc size to make your own calculations but I don't know how to specify the disc size for DIF4U to make automatic calculations on its own. Like how can I specify that DIF4U should use say Safe-10MB?
Thanks in advance,

any changes you make to the DVD-R size in the DVD-calc section of DIF4U will set those changes for the bitrate-calcs automatically, so if you are looking for a safe overhead, you could try 4689514240 (Safe - 10 Megs)'. as long as you have 'save settings on exit -always' set in global options it will calculate bit-rates based on this setting.

@jel,
Thanks for the info. Did not knew that the calculator utility is actually a place to do settings. I always thought that its a simple utility to do manual calculations.

There's lots of little hidden extras like that in DIF4U :)
I'm actually thinking of changing that DVD Size control and just putting in a control where you can specify the size down the byte. If I do, I'd like people to post the size they end up choosing that works best. Or their technique for choosing a size.
