Can't play xvids.

Sorry if this is a repeat, I searched but couldn't find anything

Ok, for some reason I cannot play xvids in windows media player anymore. It worked a couple days ago, but now it refuses to play any xvids. Even sometimes when I try to play them in media player classic, it will not work. When I use Divx player it always messes up to where the video and sound is not synched.

I have tried fddshow, and many other codecs, but it still doesn't seem to fix my problem. I was wondering if there was anything you knew of that would cause this to happen, because having to use 3 different media players for different videos is starting to suck.

I have a basically brand new Toshiba laptop, here are the specs if necessary.

512 ram
64 meg video

First, let me clear something up. The Xvids do play in media player classic, but they fail a lot and it is a pain in the ass.

I do not actually know what codecs I have, is there a way to look? I just used the Divx codec to play the Xvid files, and it always worked up until a couple weeks ago.

I tried a couple codec packs to fix it, but they never worked so I uninstalled them. I even tried to re-install windows media player, and the Divx codec/player, but it still didn't fix the problem.

if your having problems with divx playing xvid try installing the xvid codec available at http://koepi.org/xvid.shtml . Disable Generic mpeg4 support in the xvid codec and setup the FDDshow player to use "Xvid 1" as the decoder instead of libcodec mpeg4. Give it a try and hopefully that works.

Have you played these files before? whats the error msg that apears when it doesn't play? codec packs == Very bad ;) use ffdshow for xvid/divx etc it does work :)
Have you ran adaware / spybot? spyware does allot of stuff to a system.

Tried both, neither worked. :(
I think I might know what is wrong... A while ago I downloaded a movie, and it came with these weird codecs that you needed to use. I used them to play the video, then afterwards deleted them. could they have uninstalled something, and should I download that again?

hmm does it give a specific error? Does it not show any video or is it just unsynced video/audio.

Suggestions:
Step 1: uninstall Xvid, Divx, FFDShow
Step 2: install th latest FFDshow Build https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=53761&release_id=274595

if the xvids still don't play
Step 4 Uninstall FFDshow that you just installed
Step 5: install xvid 1.0.2 from http://www.Koepi.org

if that doesn't work we will need more information on what exactly is the problem.

Also make sure that all your hardware is installed correctly i.e. there are no hardware warnings in the microsoft hardware manager.

That is the error I get when I try to play the files in windows media player. Windows media player refuses to play anything avi, divx, xvid related, so basically only mpegs. Media Player classic plays them most of the time, but it does mess up and the audio and video become unsynched. ChronoCross, i tried all the steps you suggested, and still no video. No hardware problems either.

run the file through Gspot and post the results. MPC has build in routines to handle some file types , like ogg and some container formats. Maybe there is a issue on that side?

I tried, but it wouldn't do anything.
I read some of the comments and it said that I had multiple codecs capable of decoding both audio and video, but it said that directshow was unable to render the movie. is there a way to export a complete list of everything Gspot found, i couldnt figure out how.

ok, I got it to work.
Like I said, when I had downloaded 25th hour movie, it came with a bunch of wierd codecs needed to play it. when I was done I uninstalled the codecs, because I didn't want them on my computer if I didn't need them.

The codec is called UV DirectShow. I was wondering, what would uninstalling that codec have done to make it not work anymore?

suggestion....do not install codec packs like that.

what it uninstalled was the AVI SPLITTER. that's the thing that makes AVI'S run in pretty much all players. MPC has it's own avi splitter which is "sometimes" able to handle wierd avi's.

Where can I get a seperate AVI splitter? I don't want this pack on the computer, but if I uninstall it it deletes the AVI splitter.

my advice : if your using XP roll back to a date when everything worked (using system restore) ;).
if you put things on your desktop move them before hand to your document folder.
