DivX Beta Browser Plug-In Contest

Guys, I thought you might like to know about this. I'm sure SeeMoreDigital will have a field day with this one.

With all the excitement around our new browser plugin, we've decided to turn things up a notch here at DivX Labs: BAM! Well, we're not putting more capsaicin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsaicin) into the plugin per se, we're holding a plugin skinning/creation contest where you can win some awesome prizes. Our grand prize winner will receive an Avel LinkPlayer2 HD DivX Certified DVD player, and two first prize winners will each get a Phillips DVP-642 (or regional equivalent of your choice).

Entries will be accepted until 20:00 GMT (12:00 PST, GMT-0800) on 2004-12-10. So fire up those creative engines and get cracking.

To get started, first read the official contest rules (http://www.divx.com/contest/#contestrules) , then check out MikX's documentation (http://www.mikx.de/divx_reference.php) . You can also look at my attempt at making a plug-in (http://lordrpi.intercarve.net/plugin.html) . It may not look very exciting, but if I can do it, you can do better!

You MUST use the Killer Bean clip we are providing here: http://showcase.divx.com/kb2.divx as your default movie. You must also provide your own hosting for your plug-in.

Keep in mind that we will be posting any submissions we like on this site. Winners will be announced on 2004-12-17, so stay tuned.

I would participate. But I can't get it to work in any of the many browsers I use. Can someone say ActiveX ack!?

It's a beta that supports only IE. Support for other browsers will come, but not in time for the compo. Grand prize is an HD DivX Certified DVD player, and as much as I'm an advocate of Mozilla, I might be tempted to use IE for that player... ;)

Thanks for the name mention David. Much as I would like to take an active part in this topic I think you already know my preferred style of media player browser. Anyway, for those who don't, it's this one: -

Some of you may recognise that it's based on QuickTime's media browser player.

Personally, I can't stand looking at players that like to dominate web pages. Which is why I like this ones neatness and overall simplicity. And the fact that the function buttons and scroll bar only use 16 vertical pixels.

If I knew how to create a version of it as my entry for the competition I would... but sadly I don't :(

That said, if by some quirk of fate I had have entered and won. I would have elected to raffle off the prize and give the money to charity anyway.

By-the-way, GSpot reports the "Killer Bean" clip as DivX4. Why DivX4?

It's all an issue of licensing, really. There are a few license free movies in our showcase, but we'd prefer to standardize on one. Perhaps I can get a newer version. Thanks for the input.

As for my little design, you can see that we both think alike. Except I messed up in photoshop so I ran with controls at 17 pixels high. I will be improving it - as the bulk of functionality isn't present.

Did I mention I like the ability to scrub through a film? Hehe, I've actually gotten used to watching certain videos at 2X speed :)

Time surely is money. When you're watching all the episodes of a TV series, it can add up to a lot of time, and playing them back at 2X speed will save you *lots* of time.

Ok, getting back on track. I'm going to let you guys know that we've updated our DivX Beta Browser Plug-in - Read about it here (http://labs.divx.com/archives/000034.html).

Edit: Unfortunately it's still IE only

As long it is a activeX component it will always be IE only.
Choice can be justified coz there are a lot of IE users out there. But there is also a significant user base for mozilla based browsers and hope to see a mozilla plugin showing up.

In what way is this version of the "plug-in" different to the old version?

The main bug fix helps people that were having problems connecting through a proxy. This new build should prevent any problems. There may be some other tweaks, but this is the big one.
