Demuxing

I've asked a few questions about demuxing in various other threads the last week. I'm still not sure that I get it right (I'm sorry for being such a pain-in-the-ass-nOOb!).

I'm in the process of adding extra custom made subtitles to a DVD. One of the things I have to do, is to demux the main movie in the titleset, i.e. separate the audio, subtitle and video streams.

I used to use VobEdit for this job, but I've seen in various posts around here that this program should be avoided? Or should only be used for elementary streams?

What is meant by that, and why is it so? Could anyone explain this to me?

2COOL has replied to another one of my posts that programs like DVD Decrypter, IfoEdit and SmartRipper can be used for demuxing instead of VobEdit. I can't find the function in IfoEdit. I then tried DVD Decrypter, but it seems like the program can only demux if you have the source files on a DVD in your DVD drive.

Which freeware tool can I use to demux the streams in a simple way directly from files on my harddisk?

How about jsoto's new proggy, PgcDemux? Can it do the job better than VobEdit?

As suggested, SmartRipper does a very good demuxing job.
