Since these are the newest mpeg4 decoder chips,
and i haven't heard any comparison between the 3,
maybe someone can post a link or some experiences?

How bout future chips that have been announced?
Is there any hope of a perfect mpeg4 support?

btw. this Samsung HD745 (http://www.samsung.co.uk/cgi-bin/ecuk/product/product_detail.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0722323357.1097776096@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccfadcmkkfleljcfekcefedffgdfmh.0&categoryPath=%2fSEUK+Products%2fHome+Entertainment%2fDVD+Player%2fHypervision&prodID=DVD-HD745%2fXEU&detailTab=Specifications#detailTab) uses the Zoran Vaddis 7 chip.

The AVeL LinkPlayer (AVLP2/DVDG) (http://www.iodata.com/news/releases.php?newsID=29&tot=20&ts=4&tsc=22) uses the new Sigma EM8620L chip.

Info about the Vaddis 7 from Zoran are spare, but i think it can only playback SDTV resolutions and can upsample DVDs and Mpeg-4 to HDTV resolutions. The Sigma EM8620L can playback HDTV (native)
in Mpeg-4 at 720p and 1080p for DVD. So it looks like to me

Sigma EM8620L = HDTV (native)
Zoran Vaddis = SDTV (upsampled HDTV)
MediaTek 1389 = SDTV

dunno how the Vaddis compares vs the MediaTek tough. But the most advanced @ the moment is definiatly (most Power) the Sigma solution :)

The Zoran chip supports almost the same as the Mediatek chip but has no problems with Xvid+Packet Bitstream.
The player that i have seen with Zoran chip has somewhat poor FF/REW, even with DVD.

I really wonder if the Sigma chip can reach the high expectations, i hope they are not using the same Linux core as in the previous chipset.

This is a translation from a slovak forum on DivX/Xvid/MPEG4 capable DVD players (http://divx.center.sk/index.php):

one of the forum visitors writes, that a fellow of him has bought a Samsung DVD-HD745 (http://www.samsungelectronics.co.uk/cgi-bin/ecuk/product/product_detail.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1875065206.1098807808@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccccadcmliiigejcfekcefedffgdfmi.0&categoryPath=%2fSEUK+Products%2fHome+Entertainment%2fDVD+Player%2fHypervision&prodID=DVD-HD745%2fXEU) (UK model name), which is told to be built around the Zoran Vaddis 7 chip. so he went to check it out. this is what he found out:

afaik there are 2 mediatek chips the 1389 "GE" and "DE"
If I remember right, the "GE" had problems with packed bitstream,
but the "DE" also played packed bitstream fine.
Wonder what the difference in pro mpeg4 features there are between Zoran and Mediatek then...

The Sigma chip I've read also doesnt support GMC in XviD ...

I have not seen any Mediatek player that played packet bitstream + more than 1 bframe.
Not 1389GE,not 1389DE and not 1389EE.

also interesting, is that sony is releasing 3 new dvd players with mpeg4 support, which utilise an own decoder chip called "CXD-9804R".

The cheapest one being the Sony DVP-NS765 for 170,- EUR list price.

Not 1389GE,not 1389DE and not 1389EE. What's the verdict with DivX's "Adaptive Multiple Consecutive" B-VOP implementation compared to XviD's... Does it fair any better?

@SeeMoreDigital:
DivX runs fine. I thought that was the reason for DivX to not use packed bitstream with more than 1 bframe. Many of their certified player would not play such files...

@stereozulu:
I have currently the Sony 765P at home.

If you want to know anything special...

Hi Zhnujm,

So let me get this right. Some non "DivX Certified" players fitted with MK chip-sets can spin DivX mB-VOP encodes (without packed bit-stream) but not XviD's max 2B-VOP implementation (with or without packed bit-stream).... How bizarre is that?

If this is the case, then it just goes to prove that "DivX Certification" is holding back progress when it comes to Mpeg4 ASP playback in stand-alones...

Now all we need to work out is why XviD's max 2B-VOP implementation does not work in non "DivX Certified" players?

Cheers

well, i have the KiSS DP-500 which is the old sigma chip and it has no problem with 2 consecutive bframes in xvid. it also plays back packed bitstream (with or without bframes)

it's hard to believe the newer MT chipset has problems with that.

the sony seems to be hopeless if it doesnt play back xvid without changing fourcc to divx

Yes, its a sad story - its such a fine player but without support for other mpeg-4 codecs somewhat useless. :(

I think you got me wrong, theres no difference in certified or non-certified players.
All (i have seen) play DivX with bvop>1, and all play xvid with bvop>1 without packed bitstream
And all play Xvid with bvop=1, with or without packed bitstream.
But none of them can play Xvid with bvop>1 and packed bitstream.

I only think the reason why DivX dropped the use of packed bitstream in their bvop>1 implementation was because already certified mediatek based players would not play such files.

this german test of the Gericom AD 2020 (Bellagio) says the mediatek DE plays 2 bframes with packed bitstream ....

Zhnujm

Well, there are also many people who say their player can play files above 2GB...
And GMC does work with Xvid RC4... of course...

I had the Bellagio AD2020 already at home, it the same as the Gericom.
The same as every other mediatek player.

But you can try for yourself. :)

--edit
btw, they DO play xvid+bframes>1+packed bitstream, but if there are 2 bframes the video stutters.

stereozulu
27th October 2004, 23:19
well. a friend of mine has the 1389GE, which doesnt play packed bitstream at all. We tried gmc + xvid with and without bframes, always stuttered. So it seems no standalone can handle xvid 1.0+ with gmc up to now...

(maybe xvid beta 4 only had 1 warp point in gmc?!)
i dont know how they got that result, and i dont feel like installing xvid beta 4 now.

CruNcher
28th October 2004, 01:22
stereozulu yes the RC4 used 1 Warppoint for GMC but packed Bitstream with 1 consective b-frame should be no problem but the stuttering comes from GMC and the first time i expierenced that problem it was no stuttering but more a picture slideshow if 3 Warppoint XviD 1.0/1.1 GMC gets heavily used in a Scene ;) but imho GMC is one of the useless Mpeg-4 tools anyway, so be sure it playbacks Qpel,Custom Matrixes, packed bitstream <1 and you on the Safe side. The Vaddis 7 SOC sems to be an updated MT 1389 to me :) but the new Sigma is another Generation the 3rd now with the abillity to playback HDTV 720p res Videos :) Im sure MediaTek will soon present their 3rd Generation SOC too but this time it looks like Sigma is faster with spreading their Chips into the market :P

Nice one manono,

I suppose it's early days for players sporting the Sigma chip-set......

......I wonder what ever happened to the Kiss player(s) we were all waiting for?
