PAL ou NTSC?

I live in a country where the tv broadcasting standard is PAL-M
I've heard that PAL-M is a hybrid between PAL and NTSC-M
In fact, most VHS tapes and DVDs here are NTSC, some are PAL and most tv sets are able to decode both
My question is: is it possible to find out if a certain analogue recording was done in NTSC or PAL?

Simply cap it with preview. If the pic is black and white you have the wrong standard :)

Some Phillips chips/driver combo's are autodetect by the way.
