I can see that there is some divergence in my other thread towards using projectors as HDTV displays and PC monitors so in order to better seperate the two and concentrate better on the individual subjects am starting this one.

Here in this thread I am going to attempt to concentrate more on just the projector but toward the end of the other thread there is also projector-specific information I suggest you read if you are interested in them. This thread starts out generalized but will get more and more projector-specific as it progresses.
I have and do these things myself and the information provided is not just parroting others in order to waste some more space on this server. I am real, this is real and this is about what and how I do it and what I do it with and why. The intent is to expose a complete and real system, what it can do and how this one is set up so that if you are interested in taking YOURSELF this far you could actually duplicate it without the need to do endless experimentaion, research and investment, and, it would ALL work for YOU almost right off the bat. Of course there are endless variations possible and I will take specific questions on some but my threads are about MY SPECIFIC ONE---a real and functiong system. It can take years to accomplish this completely on your own as it did myself and the few others here that have actually accomplished it.
The HDTV stuff is coming along fine. I am getting ever-closer to getting it tied-and-tried-and-proved completely, with and into my computer and attempting to capture and work with the signal. Looking at the cable box furnished by the cable company I can see the evidence of things to come in the next few years that we have heard about but there is much we have not yet heard about. Remember when the telephone system went from pulse to touch-tone and the keypad showed up with all those new symbols? It took time after that before they each began their functions and those have expanded ever since. The advent of HDTV is much more revolutionary and far-reaching and will bring more sweeping changes in one swipe than anything to date because the power of computers is also behind it & that was not so at the time of change in the telephone system. The backbone of it all has been planned so that there is much flexibility in features and functions that can and will be added as they become possible. Your TV will have internet access also and much that you use your computer for like banking & email can be done on your TV & that ability is soon to be put into place. Provisions have been made so that things not yet invented can also be incorporated easily. To me it is kind of like watching the space program taking us to the moon. I see it happening and know what they have planned and it is now like watching those Saturn rockets launch one-by-one until they finally got there. Of course that became common place after some time and the excitement wore off for most everyone but it was exciting at the very time and still is when I look back at that. It is so complex---what the engineers are doing---and there are so many working on it all over the world, unlike just the USA and the USSR back then, that it will be much more far-reaching for you and I and impact our lives much more. But, it will proceed rather slowly over the next couple of years as they fine-tune the hardware and during that time they will push the public to get digital TV & HDTV so that things can be completely switched over to digital for everthing. If I had telephone company stocks & those companies were not heavily invested in cable TV companies I think I would shift the investments towards cable companies. They will lose many customers as cable starts to carry phone traffic also. That is starting now. The phone companies will lose worth for a time but will not die in the end. They will replace copper wires to your house with fiber optics which is even better than cable. So, cable becomes ever-more-important day by day for now but then, say 10 or 20 years from now, the shift of power leans to fiber optics & the telephone companies have more of that in place now than anyone else.
On the surface though, the intent is make it as easy and painless as possible for people to get used to things and adopt the new things coming.
All you will really see is a cable TV box & remote similar to what you have now and a different type of TV. It is just that they will continue to add things you can do with that remote such as banking, internet, & of course the HDTV. There may be buttons on that remote that do nothing for a while but not many more added. Ther may also be connections and ports on the cable box th are nonfunctional for now such as firewire and USB to mention a few. Every new thing will be done by bringing up a screen on your TV, kind of like your computer monitor, you just open up that program & do that one. It may be best understood as a blend of TV, phones, internet, and computers so we do not have seperate machines to do each thing as we do now.
Personally, I enjoy the projector and see it as a much better monitor for the HDTV and computer than a reletively small regular HDTV monitor. There is just so much information it is harder to spread it out on a smaller screen & the difference to you is kind of like your larger computer monitor---you find it easier to see and use. Well, I see it as bigger is better because it is easier to see & work with. It just happens to be cheaper and clearer, or at least as clear also, and is more functional. It may sound drastic but it is not. Soon the typical HDTV screen will be so crowded you will need more room & I would rather be ahead of the game so I can spread all this stuff out so I can see it. It is less confusing that way just like on computers & that is why I have several large monitors now. The projector is just a huge, high quality one that can also display HDTV. An HDTV itself is just an expensive mid-sized monitor and I would soon outgrow that and regret the investment in it and replace it.
