How to access "unreferenced material"?

I recently purchased MediaBlasters release of Samurai Reincarnation. An apparent authoring error causes the disc to skip a chapter. I've located the missing chapter with DvdShrink in full disc mode, it appears as "unreferenced material" in vts3, the title set that holds the film. The unreferenced missing chapter doesn't show up in reauthor mode.

Can anyone suggest a tool that will allow me access to "unreferenced material" and rip the missing chapter?

I don't think you have a ripping problem as DVD Shrink successfully analyzed your whole DVD. With that said, IMO, you should've posted in the IFO-VOB Editors forum since DVD Shrink is working the way it supposed to with unreferenced materials.

e.g.

Chapter 1 played
Chapter 2 played
Chapter 3 skipped
Chapter 4 played

If this is what you are experiencing then I agree with you that bad authoring is to blame. It is possible to fix it but more research must be done.

Actually, all chapters play, the unreferenced material is a chapter that should have been between chapters 12 and 13. So, although the chapter does not play, it's authored in a way that it's unable to play.

I've created "unreferenced material" in the course of making my own discs with Scenarist. Any time I edit an .m2v file within Scenarist the bits edited out appear as unreferenced material in DvdShrink, I believe this is what happened with Samurai Reincarnation.

My problem isn't with DvdShrink, I know it's working as it should. My problem is accessing the missing capter and ripping it. I'll then reinsert it into it's proper place when reauthoring.

I'll gladly use an ifo/vob editor if that's what it takes, but my ultimate goal is to get the missing "unreferenced material" chapter on my harddrive for reauthoring.

I wish I didn't have to go through the trouble, but MediaBlasters has yet to address the authoring error and likely has no plans to fix it.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I don't do Scenarist but what was your gameplan with using it in regards to your DVD? BTW, is this an anime or the one with Sony Chiba (non-anime)? I tried to Google it.

In your Scenarist files, are you keeping menus? If so, does your scene selections for Chapter 12 and 13 work as plan? I'm just inquiring on this as whether your unreference cell be inserted as a new chapter or appended cell to Chapter 12.

This is MediaBlasters recent release of the Chiba film, looks great, it's a shame they screwed it up. I'll probably rip the main motion menu and recreate the still chapter selection pages. Everything else on the original disc is fine, I'll only put the film, in it's newly created proper form, on dvdr.

I'm guessing there are a few different ways to do this. My plan is to simply experiment with different methods within Scenarist until it works well or, as a last resort, reencode with the missing scene in place. Thanks for your help 2COOL.

My 2 cents worth:

I believe that DVDShrink can actually help here.

1. Go to Reauthor mode
2. Drag the movie to the DVD Structure frame on the left
3. Go to Set Start/End Frames dialogue
4. Set Start at Chapter 1
5. Set end at Chapt 12 (or whatever was the last in the proper run of the movie). OK to get back to main screen
6. Drag in unreferenced material, which is really a chapter
7. Drag in movie again
8. Start / End frames to 13 / end of movie respectively
9. Backup!

Shrink will effectively combine the 3 titles (1-12, unref,13-end).

This method is documented in the DVD Shrink forums about combining a flipper - which is very much like what you are needing to do.

Thanks blutach, your suggestion would be a quick and easy way to reinsert the missing chapter. Unfortunately, as I posted earlier, the unreferenced material is inaccessible under reauthor mode, although DvdShrink in full disc mode seems to be the only program I have that will acknowledge the unreferenced material even exists. I'm unable to find software that will allow access to rip the unreferenced material.

Surprising that you can't see it (even under extras??). Have you tried PgcEdit to find out what the exact TTN/VOBID is etc? It has a wealth of info on all PGCs, including a section on unreferenced material.

I'm sure with this info you could then perhaps try to demux the relevant material and then remux it in the way you wanted.

If the DVD has not ILV/multi-angle material you can follow this steps:

Extract all the cells with VobEdit. With the log and IFOEdit you will know which chapter is each cell from.

Add one blank chapter with AddChapter

Replace the Cells, let's say
11 with the unreferenced one
12 with the extracted 11
13 with the extracted 12
...
To replace the cells, you can use VobBlanker (Cell replace) or probably (i'm not sure) PGCEdit (Cell remap). Try first PgcEdit, if works , it will be much faster.

After that, you will have to manually adjust the scene selections, they will not poit to the appropiate cell. You can do it in two ways
- Manually deleting the chapter (but not the cell) in IFOEdit.
- Changing the button commands in the menu
