Ad free trial version of DivX?

I have always done MPEG1/2 encoding and capture for DVD. Now I'm going for HTPC so I'm a potential DivX convert. I downloaded both DivX Pro and Dr. DivX trials. Not the free version, the trial version and it won't encode without installing that mother@%$^ing Pop-Up producing Gain Adware. I was inadvertently infected with that crap a while back and don't ever want it again. I'm willing to buy DivX, but I want to try it first. Is there any way to try it for even a day without installing bugs on my system?

you can have 15 days of free trial without anything else installed on your system or
you can a 6 month free trial if you install the google Internet explorer task bar that actually block the pop ups !

I'll give it a shot, but I'm fairly sure that's what I just uninstalled and it said I needed to install Gain Adware to use it. I've had the Google bar for a couple of years. Since it's already installed, is it possible DivX went to blan B consisting of Gain?

That is definitely what I had already istalled. I reinstalled it. I'm encoding with TMPGEnc now. When it finishes I'll try VirtualDub Mod again and see if It wants to put Gain on. I guess I could try uninstalling Google to see if it will install that instead of Gain.

No there is no Plan B with GAIN, there is *no* GAIN code in the distribution, and if you already have the google toolbar, you will be able to get the 6 month without any change to your system.
Also there are numerous application that install GAIN, make sure that the issue is not comming from some other place.

Actually you don't even need to have the Google Toolbar installed to take the DivX Pro 6 Month Trial. You can install the DivX Pro 6 Month Trial and opt out of the Google Toolbar if you like.

I was wrong. I apparently installed the free DivX version at some point in the past. It does require Gain to run. Once I hunted down and uninstalled the free version, Pro started encoding without a prompt of any kind.

Edit: I am not infected with Gain. I got a DivX window telling me it wouldn't run without Gain installed, and would I like to install it now?

Can we have some consensus please? :confused:

When I installed the 5.2.1 trial it would only give me a 15 day trial not the 6 months I was expecting (I didn't install the Google toolbar). This is the first time I've seen an explanation anywhere as to why.

Well I promptly uninstalled it and went back to 5.11, and have seen no compelling reason to upgrade since that experience. :(

Full answer:
We haven't had any GAIN version from 5.2 which was released mid-July.

When you install DivX Pro 6 month trial you'll get the 6 month trial regardless of whether you choose to install the Google Toolbar or not.

When you install DivX, you'll get the DivX Pro 6 month trial if you choose to take it when you're offered it at the begining of the installation sequence. No need to install the Google Toolbar here either.

That said, the Google Toolbar kicks ass and we at DivX actually use it a lot ;)

When I use a PC without the toolbar I feel handicapped. I'm glad to see that you let the leprosy of that Gain crap go for the gift of the Google Toolbar. I like it so much, I even let it phone home to Google to tell them whatever it is they want it to. I also picked up 11 shares of Google last week. The next MicroSoft type stock, I think.

Speaking of rising market companies, as long as I've got one of the DivX guys on the line; what are the chances I'll find a reasonably priced, respectable brand, DivX capable DVD player/recorder after Christmas? Do you expect it to do better than VCD/SVCD did? It does seem to be superior to MPEG in every way. But, bucking the system in 60% of US homes won't be easy.

Okay, if it has nothing to do with the Google toolbar, then what is the reason for getting a 15 day trial instead of 6 months? Or more to the point, what's the solution to installing the DivX Pro trial and it actually being a 6 month trial?

After trying twice with the same result I gave up on it :(
