View Full Version : DVD's won't play on APEX player

I’m having a rather odd hardware problem, and I wonder if anyone has some insight or advice. I have 2 DVD players … an old APEX 500 (still works great) and a newer JVC home entertainment system. I decided to get a DVD burner specifically so I could make DVD’s to watch on both systems, but especially the APEX. I first bought an HP external DVD burner, with a batch of Memorex DVD+R disks (web research indicated that the APEX 500 would only play +R’s). I authored & burned a couple of DVD’s using Ulead Movie Factory 3 and they worked great on both the JVC & the APEX. I decided to return the external DVD burner and purchase an internal, and after some research I settled on the Pioneer DVR-108 dual layer burner … good reviews, good price. I’ve now created a couple of DVD’s on the same Memorex DVD+R disks using the same Ulead software. They work fine in the JVC … but they won't work in the APEX!! After spinning around for a bit, the APEX indicates that the disk is damaged, and then indicates there is no disk. Again, same brand disks & same software.
Can anyone help? I’d like to be able to keep the DVR-108, but if I can’t produce disks that work on the APEX it really defeats the main purpose of buying it in the first place
Thanks!!

You probably have another problem, but.... I stopped using memorex disk (dvd+r). I had the same problem with them not wanting to play on some machines and the coaster production level was unaceptable. I don't have either problem with any other brand. The funny part is I have a memorex burner. The firmware is updated to the latest enhancement.

Interesting about the Memorex ... however, I've had exactly the same problem with another brand of DVD+R's ... they play on the JVC, but not the APEX.

Does the HP writer use Bitsetting on DVD+R? The Pioneer drive definitely doens't, so maybe your APEX player can only read DVD+R if bitsetting was used

Read the booktype of a disc written in that HP burner

alexnoe, I downloaded DVDINFO Pro, and used it to examine the DVD that was burned by the HP. All it says under Book Type is "DVD+R". What am I missing?
Sorry to be so thick ...

That means that Bitsetting (or lack of it) is not the problem, and that something else is wrong

I have a JVC and an Apex player and the JVC will play anything, but my Apex does need the +R's bitset to play. However both play -R's without issue.
I own a NEC 3500A and with proper firmware and software it supports bitsetting.
The easy fix is to switch to quality -R discs. Preferably by Ritek or TY both can be had at rima.com for a good price.

I'll pick up a DVD-R & try it ... I gotta say, though, if that doesn't work I'm giving up & getting another DVD player. Even my innate Irish stubborness has limits!
Thanks to all for your suggestions, though!:)
