XviD not the standard codec anymore ..

Hello,

I have encoded a few movies with the newest XviD codec and since I've installed WinDVD 6 my Media Player doesn't use the XviD codec anymore. I've checked my files with GSpot and after I render them I see that the codec used is "InterVideo MPEG4 Video Decoder" and that the FourCC XVID is assigned to the InterVideo Codec. IV just told me that I have to remove WinDVD to get rid of their codec. There has to be another way .. but I haven't found out how I could change that. I'v tried to check the XviD codec settings through "Configure Decoder" and all I can change there is FourCC's for DivX, DX50 and MP4V. I know my English is bad but I hope that I explained it good enough ;)

The Problem with the IV codec is that it has problems decoding my XviD movies. I encoded them with AutoGK 1.60, XviD 1.0.2.
Maybe somebody can help me ..

Radlight has a tool with which you can cahnge the dshow filter merrits (that is the "priority" of the codec).

With their tool you can change the windvd mpeg4 filter merrit to something very low so it won't be used.

Or unregister their decoder - unfortunately you need the filename for that, something similar to

regsvr32 /u ivmp4.ax

would suffice. You only have to find the proper filename, ivmp4.ax is taken out of thin air.

I found a file called mp4vdec.ax in the \Intervideo\Common\Bin and \Intervideo\DVD6 directory and unregistered it, now everything is working fine. Thx alot for your help ;)

With GSpot 2.5x beta you can either reduce the codec's merit in general (or unregister it), or you can remove a specific unwanted fourcc code from a specific codec, forcing the next lower priority one to handle it. You have to go to GSpot settings and enable 'expert' mode first.

It's the C:\Program Files\InterVideo\Common\Bin\MP4VDEC.ax I guess. It is really annoying when this happens. Roxio did it. Roxio_DivX.dll cause XP SP2 Explorer to crash. Their decoders don't properly decode every XviD/DivX file either. Now InterVideo is doing it.

I'd like to have XviD 1.1 decode as much as it can (it decodes splendidly on my Win X64 boot partition where I do my Gordian Knot work); the ffdshow filter is rendering almost everything very blockily (far inferior to VLC). When I uninstalled ffdshow and installed Koepi's latest XviD 1.1, I found that 3ivx D4 Video Decoder was horning in (though doing a better job than ffdshow). Yes, I also have WinDVD 6, but I don't see that intervening.
I borked this project once using the RadLight tool, but had created a System Restore point before so no harm done.
Q: How best to make Koepi do the most?
[BTW, thanks to the corps of codec developers who are bringing so much pleasure to so many. A new world has opened now that I'm watching *.avi movies on my Pocket Loox 720 with a 6 Gb CF drive!]

decoding xvid content stretched from 480x368 -) 1600x1200 (always a stress to the decoder) and i must say with the following options ffdshow looked better.
ffdshow
post-processing
automatic quality control - two sliders (deblock (h) + deblock (v))
strength 256
SPP deblocking

xvid
deblocking (Y + UV)

would any other settings in xvid's decoder increase the quality of playback?
as a side note - ffdshow with the SPP deblocking creates a wonderful picture despite being stretched to three and a third times the original size.

I figured out how to use the new GSpot and that did the trick for me.
The ffdshow SPP thing borks the picture for me (nVidia 6600GT, 75.90 driver, Win XP), but when I installed the newest ffdshow under 32-bit Win with other post-processing and unblocking options, it took over and does yeoman work.
I still think XviD 1.1 beta 2 decoder better under Win X64.

You may force ffdshow to use XVID to decode, instead of libavcodec. That way you will have the best decoder, while still having all ffdshow postprocessing features. The best of the two worlds ;) . To do that you will need one of the latest ffdshow Alphas which accept XVID 1.x. Other option is to enable ffdshow to accept raw video input. It will be inserted just after XVID.

I don't use any decoding packs or other filters, as I find the decoder filter that came with the encoder is often better than the ones in decoding packs, and it just messes with my head when I use more than 1 MPEG-4 codec anyway. I regularly run into problems, and find that a complete uninstall and unregistering of all MPEG-4 codecs and decoding filter packs usually helps the problem.

On a similar note, I have some decoding issues with XviD 1.1.0-beta1. I encoded a DVD, and it will not play back smoothly at all on my system. I have tried many things, including the DivX playback filter, the 3ivx playback filter, and ffdshow's playback filter, but it still trundles along at 6 or 7 FPS. It's really driving me up the wall as I don't really want to have to switch encoding codecs just to get a decent playback speed. The computer specs are in my sig, if anybody would care to shed any light on this. I'm guessing I need a new "heart and lung transplant" for my system, as it's rather old and needs a new lease of life. For good.
