Just got to digital-Heaven!!!

I don't know where else to go with this one so!!!....... I am not here to brag---I just have to say something that is all---this was SO HARD for me to do but I finally made it & hopefully a few can relate to it.

I guess this might be a rave but I don't mean it to be---oh well I have to take the risk or I'll explode!!!---I just have to talk about it. A while back I kind of started on a digital quest I guess you could say & I'm kind of wondering if there are many others out there who have done the same---there just has to be but I don't seem to know where they are at. If so how about just letting me know Ok , so I don't feel so all-alone. Well I JUST got there so I am crowing a bit because it SO COOL and I am excited & I mean nothing other than that.!!!

OK, I am talking about designing and building my own custom PC's, 640 gbts of striped fast HDD RAID storage, networks, servers, DVD burning, 5.1 audio, capturing digital audio and video, video editing, digital camcorders, 600 watts of 5.1 surround audio on a Pioneer amp and Audigy 2ZS Platinum Pro, 5.1 speakers, HDTV, digital video projectors with 6 foot X 11 foot wide-screen projector screen, absolutely every audio & tv channel Comcast can provide analog to music to HDTV & all foreign and domestic, digital TIVO, cable internet, NetFramework, my websites, making my own movies, MIDI keyboards, & yes, I do some oil painting too. Well JUST NOW I have finally completed the intergration of it ALL!!! Every last piece of this hardware and software is all hooked together and I can run any & all from anywhere and on my remote---from movies, to gaming to applications ---I mean all of it.

I have never worked so hard at something before in my life---it kind of feels like getting to the peak of the talllest mountain in the world and looking around and you are all by yourself just taking in the view & resting for a while. Man, WHAT A VIEW is about all I can say right now!!!!

The why's behind it I really don't know for sure---maybe I JUST HAD TO is about all I can say. I do know it was INTENSE to say the least and that there was nowhere to go to find out how, what & the rest. The research has been a killer in itself. There are at least 9 million wrong directions and paths and pitfalls out there for each and every part from hardware to software to digital cable.

The how's I can explain but don't unless asked. I don't mind but I have found, unfortunately, that it just seems to bury most people so it seems you just cannot talk about it much. That is kind of what I mean when I say it is lonely out here---hard to describe but it seems to alienate most others so I learned, or, am learning to just let them ask. At least this way no one has to read this if they don't want to.

If anyone has even been near this place I am at just please say so---I know some have but WHERE ARE THEY???

Well good for you. I know the feeling your going through. I have been on that quest. I completed mine a year ago and always look for new adventures. My system is 2 top of the line PC's (Built by me) with a combined storage of over 800 gig and 2 gigs memory with the latest 5.1 audio linked optically to my top of the line yamaha 8.1 receiver which drives all bose top of the line speakers. Video displays on a 48" hatachi HDTV and I as well get all the HD cable channels and I also use direct TV for even more HD programing. It complements my 700 DVD titles. Oh and I as well have it all remote controlled from one controller from anywhere in the house. Hell I even dim the lights from the remote.

But personally i dont think the satisfaction is not the final if it will ever end. As dannyv suggested, after that you will be looking for new ways to make things better as such you will back in your quest before you know.

SO , I AM NOT ALONE!!! heheheh. And at least I did not scare YOU!

I too run a 3200+ w/ Sony DRU700a dual layer burner. ATI AWI 9600 PRO 128 mgbt., 512 mgbt DDR fast RAM, digital capture, dual monitors, & of course my projector monster monitor, & more but that is some of it anyway. Of course we always add more but I am not hurting for anything right now.

I guess the next part I'm after is to capture, edit, handle & burn HDTV---I may want to talk to you about that. I have got to rest tonight in glory first though. This, I do deserve. I am having to teach the cable company too along the way but that is OK. There is a good tale to tell about all that!!! I think it is kind of funny & I ended up getting the whole package for FREE because I guess they thought I was nuts!!! And, yes I'm waiting BlueLaser & the rest like you.

The remote stuff is nice. My PC's are located in a closet 25 feet or so from my workstations & I would imagine you now why. What is a lot of fun is that my whole place is being remodeled right now as I work on all this stuff----kitchen, bath & every room from top to bottm including ceilings & floors which just adds to the fun, of course!!

If you happen to know where our kind hang out, other than here, please let me know. I like it here & all but there must be some places I am missing.

I want to look around for a while longer and if I don't find a permanent home I just may crank up the wildest free-wheeling limited access website dedicated just for this anyone has ever seen!!! No hacks, no trash welcome. I gotta warn you though---I DO have an imagination! I am just a bit past, though not above, talking about the dificult choices such as between an 80mm & 90mm case fan or the track-ball v/s optical mouse debate, if you know what I mean.

As I have been kind of busy lately I am not ready to let anyone in there yet. I was hosting & running two or three for A+ & so forth but am not now---took them down. But, what I could do & would not mind is post some pics & video of what I am doing for now. Let me know what you want to see. As for the new one I am thinking about it is probably a done deal except for the doing---in other words I am still formulating what I want it to be exactly. I know for sure you have never seen anything like it in your dreams though. For a taster---say if I wanted to do a tutorial or allow any others on it they would be in digital video & more. Another taste is flip-books. I don't know if you know what they are or their possibilites but I do. Go find out & get back to me on that. If you do I will know you are interested then maybe I explain it ABIT more. I'll talk about anything but I have to be asked is all, that way it does not look like I am trying to cram stuff down peoples throats OK? I am into about everthing under the SON if you get that. 'Just not a fool & I don't drool. I am not scared & used to be long-haired. Been in the Army & maybe the Funny-Farmy but you have to judge that for yourself!

it is nice to meet ppl who are passioned about their installation as i am. Well any information about how to setup a multimedia network would be nice and may help some newbies who is trying to do same thing.
I got most of software related things done thanks to ppl here at Doom9's forum and hereby thanks all dewds.

Maybe it will be nice to know how hardware and software are configured to your needs. So let me kick-off :)

My goal is to have a central library which streams media to browsers. Browser was choosen because it is
- platform independant.
- RTSP streaming allows video on demand and prevent from watchers ripping your media. (we have regular ppl visiting us with their pc or laptop and as such preventing them 'stealing' the library)
- no copies floating around on the network > space saving

Server:
AMD2500+, 512MB RAM, 360GIG HD RAID 5.
Windows 2000 and Darwin Streaming server, when i have my encodes got right i start creating a local website which will serve as a front end for linking to DSS.

Ahhhhhhhh, the morning arrives after some beautiful rest last night. My two computer-cats playing around & a bit of Warren Zevon or is it Zebon? on cable---nahhhh, he don't care either cause he's a music man & isn't in Webster's anyway. Lawyers, Guns and Money---damn shame things get can get that way if you make a few bucks & it does not matter if you make it on the right or the left.

This state of Nirvana gets me through about anything. So what if even though my main PC has two seperate almost cloned 100% dedicated 30gbt XP HDD's to boot from to cover about any emergency and something still goes wrong and I cannot get in. All that tells me is that I have not yet perfected my setup. I am doing the work-around now and planning the next setup to cover for this little ditty of a trouble. I know you know what I mean when I say that once you get so far along this stuff does not rattle your cage anymore.

So, you might ask, what was the root of the problem? and that IS the all-important question. From there and only there comes the solution. You see, there this is woman next door with a hornet's nest in her head that hangs in the banyan tree the serpent with a head on both ends and an A-hole in the middle resides in & damn if I did not get interupted by that. After a big dose of anti-venom and anti-hisssssssss-tamines I am feeling bit better now. Don't get the wrong take here---to be fair, I have known men with the same conditon. It is apparently a permanent affliction and there is no known innoculation but I find that isolation is a valid and reliable preventative measure.

So, redundancy and custom-designed fail-safe measures are are necessarry for me also as is evident by two independent sound systems---the computer-based and home-theater amp-based I have in place and a few others. Yes, these measures help me to achieve Nirvana and maintain it. In reflection, it seems to me that about when what used to be extreme measures became common measures I was knocking on Nirvana's door and did not even know it. Man, when she opened that invisable door I do not remember walking in---it was more like being transported there. And, you know, here, no one is yammering in my ear. I only see and hear the things I enjoy and many of those are mulit-demensional. They often seem to present themsevles to me rather than I to them and entering them is living dreams. It is almost a shame to attempt to lower this to words so I'll just leave it here.

'just got done counting the nose-hairs---24 red & 12 gray & 3 blonde on that baseball player while testing the HDTV through my projector onto my screen in an approx. 4 foot X 8 foot image. It wasn't too hard but I had to pause the TIVO to get the gray ones for sure. The guy has a few slightly inflamed facial hair folicles also but I don't really think he or his doctor can see them so they probably will never know. That is about the truth of what I am seeing. Anyone else have a representative description of how vivid their HDTV monitor is? as I would like to know. It is about the only way I can figure out to do reletive study of this. I am not really sure if I want to move the projector back or not because it is capable of displaying a 22.39 foot diagonal measured image of 16:9 HDTV and everything else at a distance of 32 feet and I just might be frightened at what I see!!---'have to get my courage up for that.

Day by day I am homeing in on going through my putr & capturing this stuff---I am almost salivating at the very thought of it!!! One of those Freudian things you know---or was that Popov?

I worked on an IBM HDD problem this morning that I have never seen the likes of before. For this I am going to have to drag out some IBM special software & dig in because it is beyond a Windows XP recovery console or Win 98 start-disc save. Not today though. I am still up on the main putr on another Win XP dedicated HDD until I can tinker with that drive problem.

I worked on my Mother's putr a bit today for her from a 3-1/2 hr. drive away. We got it straightened out. She is a kick---about 78 and laptopping it all the way! She got started about 10 yrs. ago and even has a minimal network to boot!

That's about it for now as I have got to go stretch my leggs a bit.;)

you are one of the few lucky ones. HDTV is still a wet dream for us europeans. Finally widescreen is starting to be a standard but there are still a lot of tv channels using the old 4:3 format.
I can see you have hooked up your Tivo to your beamer, how about your projector? My Sony also has an DVI in, but i currently dont have an graphic card with dual DVI (for best quality).
Another thing is that i caint find a graphics card who can output my full desktop to the beamer, i mean without panning. Currently i am outputting through VGA 1600x1200 signal to an trust video converter which converts my vga signal to composite. It works but i am not to happy about the quality. So the Quest goes on. :)

I remember that multi-governmental hassle about who owned you & I'll bet the Britts won on that, stuck you in the Zoo & gave you a putr & a big TV!!! I hope you don't mind me poking a bit of fun at you now and then because I will if I deal with you or anyone. My work is hard so I try to lighten things up a bit here & there OK??!!!

Hey, I am SERIOUS about helping you but EXACTLY WHAT do mean by "BEAMER"?????????? & I mean use the correct terms as in tech-term to tell me so I can figure out what the heck you are trying to say.


All of this and any of my posts are, of course open to anyone and the help also, provided you follow MY RULES. Soon I will cease to post more and more help here and anywhere but on my own sites (you only get links to my sites by emailing me at an address I will post later & I do it this way so anyone has to come back and look for it thus weeding some tourists out which I simply do not have time for) so as to gain more creative content and control over such, freedom and flexibility. It is just MUCH easier for me to work in other formats and I can convey and transfer better information there. I cannot even post any pics here believe me---I just about went nuts last night trying to do so in order to help out---- let alone video and much more I need to if I am to help others. It is just a necessary step for ME and I do not criticise this or any other forum in saying that. My stuff is of my creation and not some regurgitation of yet some more useless info and reams of useless data which continues to get anyone anywhere. If I am going to work then I WILL get something accomplished and with minimal efforts applied and maximum results.

To answer your Q about getting better resolution---YA just gotta turn it on!!! (I mean the HDTV) & if'n you want to capture it or just digital, I suggest you use set up through FireWire and forget composite at all costs. Digital TV and /or HDTV can be dealt with in very high quality in Component Video (analog) also, and, realistically, with no discernable loss of quality in almost all cases. Look, your DVD is component right? & that is not bad. Well, in that case it is the DVD itself that is limiting the image quality & NOT the component video even though there is an analog conversion going on. I will NOT argue with any would-be-geek who tells you otherwise even if they furnish you with 10 pounds of crap stating otherwise because over well over 50% of the info out there is dead wrong, inaccurate, does not apply, is misinterpreted, is taken out of context etc etc. I will say this; the major reason you do not see DVI on DVD players is because it is just not necessary. Same for video cards on putrs, and many digital cable receivers. I have DVI on my video card along with SVGA and have items such as a component video break-out adapter for that DVI and other DVI connectors. Learn from this that you get component from DVI & straight digital. I have a component video breakout cable also with an SVGA connnector on the other end. Just because you go DVI to DVI does not necessarily prove that you are only passing straight digital signals and/or that both pieces of hardware are using only pure digital with no conversion going on. THIS is wherein the TRUTH lies!!!

Without detailing it all here is a prime example of what one limiting factor can be, and I mean JUST ONE of the thousands in dealing with digital video.

At very near the front end of it all is the quality of the actual footage shot by that cameraman at the filming studio and processed and edited and then transmitted until you finally get it, and the transmission itself, then your receiver, your processing and/or distribution, your cables, networks, connectors, and say your end-hardware----your display be it plasma or digital projector. Note that many, many steps in this complex chain are purposely not even mentioned because you get the jist of it by now.

The actual real-life-duplicatable-anywhere-example of all of what is going on works like this and anyone can see, and duplicate it for themselves, on and with their own equipment (and THAT IS what really counts for YOU), what is happening here at MY house on MY equipment that I use and I CAN AFFORD and NEEDS to IF they sincerely desire to understand and then properly deal with this digital video to the best of his abilities and with and in some sense of sanity.

1) Turn on your [digital TV/monitor/projector](s) and any associated gear using your existing methods of connections and settings & turn off the audio for NO distractions. Surf quickly through a few channels and note the picture quality variences on each station and there will be a BUNCH of it. Now, pick a high quality one and watch several programs back-to-back including commercials and concentrate on the images & NOT the content and you will see, on the same channel, much variation in quality from program-to-program-to-commercial & so forth.

2) Do the EXACT same thing again using any and all different combinations of settings and cable connections (from lowly composite to S-Video to component, to Firewire to DVI) and hardware and software you are now capable of on that same channel taking every possibility through ALL possibilities & TAKE YOUR NOTES!!!.

3) Repeat #1 & #2 on a low-quality channel & then on a mid-quality channel & again, take those notes. I MEAN WRITE IT ALL DOWN!!!

4) If you are HDTV capable repeat #1, #2, #3 for HDTV.

5) Repeat #3 (yes, it includes #1 &# 2) substituting "playing several different DVD's" for "different channels", including some of your own burns of ALL different write-speeds of discs (2.4X, 4X, 8X etc) written AT every different write-speed from the lowest to the highest you can go in each type and speed and brand of disc in all formats you can and/or have written in and can play including your own Dual-layers if you have that capability (if you do not, then try to borrow some preferably written with the same software though but just get any Dual-layers you can).

This is really not complicated to do if approached and executed correctly and yields ONLY the reults YOU need to ascertain what works best for YOU in DTV, HDVT & DVD's and points out your strong and weak spots all through all the chains of events in all conditions and circumstances. it is from HERE you should make the decisions of changing, adding, dropping routines, software & hardware, configurations, etc. Look, it was YOU that said you wanted to be a rocket scientist and enter into this stuff seriously---not me!!! so this goes with the territory. However, it does take time but so what. You are wasting yours now anyway and getting poor results and wandering around in-the-eternal-dark trying to understand what is wrong and improve it so DO THIS!!! If you, or anyone else is not willing to then do NOT ask ME to help. I ONLY help those who help THEMSELVES first and PROVE it to me which brings me to the next point.

In order to help YOU I need YOUR data and YOU need YOUR data in exactly the same of at least one of ONLY THESE TWO workable and acceptable formats and preferrably both. If you complete one then I will accept that and work with you as you complete the other. With the data we can speak exactly the same language, and update your progress at the click of a button or so and home in on your weak-spots. I accept Microsoft ACCESS and EXCEL databases ONLY active and searchable exported to me. Give me ACCESS first & I may not even need the other so you may save some effort and time this way. You are really doing all this work anyway over time but cannot remember what did what and when and how etc but it is now hodge-podge so organize it into a usable format and execute it by going down the checklist you create when you create your database FIRST BEFORE beginning the steps.

Use "forms" in ACCESS to enter your data. Just create one with the wizard with all your custom fields. Then entering the data is a piece of cake and you can start and stop and pick up where you left off in the steps & not lose anything. I use databases for many things including a cool DVD inventory for one. It makes life easier and successful and rewarding believe me.

If you do not have ACCESS then buy it---it will save you a bundle in the end. Just buy the wrong video card etc & find out the hard way----AGAIN!!!!

If you do not have a clue as to what fields to use or create then start by listing each pice of hardware and software and various
settings and inputs and outputs and quality yields etc then it will start to make sense to YOU. You will see that by using auto-number and using data fields by entering an "X" or "HIGH, MEDIUM OR LOW" and maybe a field labled "DVD component out to Video Projector" and things like that it will just turn into a simple but repeatable checklist to go down. When you complete it it is searchable and reorganizable and viewable in all sorts of ways such as spreadsheet or pages and on and on----it does all that for you automatically so you find any desired output or result in an instant. It is NOT hard even if YOU are NOT familiar with it. If you got this far in video you can do this. If you want to go further and get better you MUST!!! as it is just another facet of it.

Now, I will say a bit about why I use projectors, what type, what inputs, quality of images, flexibilty and so forth. This is a whole world in itself & I cannot cover it here but I can touch on it a bit.

Whether or not you use computers in conjunction with your home-theater projectors are a better-for the-money-to-image-quality-and-size-yield than even the most expensive plasma displays period!!!

Spend $1800 or so on a projector or $12,000 on a plasma & you will get equal or better image and larger than plasma period!!! That is provide you get the right type etc. just as in a plasma. You have to know what to get.

You do NOT see many projectors on display and NEVER set up and displaing anything let alone HDTV at your HDTV dealers or your cable company simply and only because of and due to pure economics. The TV industry is bigger and more powerful than the projector industry and has deeper and older roots and connections with retailers. Retailers prefer to sell high end HDTV's because they make say 50% of $12,000 v/s 50% of $2000/ sale. Business is driven by economics my friends and it is that simple---ask YOUR accountant. It really IS that simple & that is why you do not see them. Not really an illegal conspiracy but a conspiracy amoung industry none-the-less of sorts and much a part of the world we live in. So, get smart or get taken----PERIOD!!!

All you need is an XGA projector and not an SXGA. I won't go there for a few years yet because my projector is now ahead of the technology waiting for it to catch up. A DLP is the ONLY way to go in my book---you could not give me a LCD & that is because of those lines you see seperating the pixels on a typical LCD HDTV monitor when you walk up to it. Those lines are much wider and visable on any large projected image. On my image those lines are so fine you can only see them at close inspection and are about 1/128th of an inch wide on my screen. In other words---you basically cannot find them and never see them when just a few feet away unlike in LCD be that in a projected image or an LCD HDTV image. I guarrantee you progressive scan is NOT better than......no matter what you hear. You cannot see the difference AT ALL so that is why SXGA is not necessary and you can save a bundle that way.

I can input composite, component, S-Video, and through SGA with my projector. Ther is NO quality improvement by going to expensive DVI and I do not care who says what----THIS IS the bottom line; but I would have it if there was.

So, I get up to about a 21 foot diagonal measure next-to-perfect HDTV image on my screen!!!! I usually actually watch an approx 8 foot to ten foot wide image depending.... at about 16 to 18 feet away with or without the lights on at up to 1800 watts of projector-lamp but I normally use a much lower wattage setting because it is all I need and it at least doubles the life of the lamp which lasts for years and years and years even if you do not work and watch a lot---I mean you have to sleep you know so do NOT worry about lamp replacement cost---it is NOT a factor to even bother yourself with at all but it along with so much else is hyped to DEATH!!!. So you spend maybe in reality about $1 to $5/month on lamp-replacement & $5 is EXTREME!!!!

Ok, on those lets say about over one thousand (approximated here because it all depends if you are speaking of displayed or broadcasted lines & someone may try to debate that point if I get more specific & there is no useful point in that) scan-lines in HDTV----do you see them on such a HUGE image-----NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! You CANNOT find them at all with a maginifying glass at the screen itself!!!! This is one of the why's of many as to why HDTV is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOD!!!!, and part of why there is so much data compacted in the signal and part of why an HDTV or monitor is required to view HDTV in HDTV----believe it or not you CAN in fact view it on a regular TV set if you have what is necessary. What that means is that you DO NOT have to throw your old set away when total digital coversion takes place no matter what you have heard to the contrary---it is JUST NOT TRUE!!! The catch is that the high quality
of HDTV will not be fully available on your old set. Yes, there is cost involved in the equipment but at least you can watch TV without going broke.

Look, I can go deep-tech on your brain if you want but I will not----go to college for that & become a digital engineer. You DO NOT need to know all that just to watch high quality HDTV. A GOOD engineer explains things like this to NORMAL people----engineers have to be weird and wired to do this stuff OK????!!! But, they make it happen for you so try not to drive at least the GOOD ONES crazy & LISTEN to what they say & DO as they say so you can SEE IT FOR YOUSELF at last and not lose any more sleep over it. What happens when you listen to laymen such as your brother-in-law who is doing the best he can & means no harm is that just one more person is confused, lost, buried and is spreading yet more DISINFORMATION around and on-and-on.

Everyone who has a post in THIS---MY THREAD---above this so far is fine folks and they really are doing what they say, I do believe, so far so I would say they are trust-worthy and in-the-know to some extent at least and they deserve some credit here. Hats off to you guys!!! I am not better but equivilent and consider myself amoung peers. I just do it differently & have more time and different concerns.

This link takes you to a 48 page manual for a fairly much state-of-the-art set-top or HDTV cable box or HDTV receiver (3 terms already for the same thing!!!) with digital TIVO, FireWire, USB and more. It is a good representative of that type of hardware, its functions and connections etc. It is not very deep but a good general user-manual to get familiar with this type of hardware and what your cable company might provide you with. The manual did NOT come with this one (the one I refer to in this thread).

It looks to me like you have not viewed this lately so let me explain. Some of what is above is directed at you but much is generalized information that is wider in scope.
