I don't think you can combine any of the promotion codes, I got a promo code for $10 off with my DVD player last month and the fine print said something like 'cannot be combined with other offers, only good for new memberships' But if you look around on deja you might find a code for 1 month free, instead of 2 weeks.

I haven't tried rentmydvd, but I must say I'm not happy with netflix. On the east coast it takes 3 or, more often, 4 days in the mail each way. And sometimes it can take 1-2 days for them to send out your next movie. Plus, half the movies in my queue are not availble now.

I could probably recommend them if your on the west coast, but not if your on the east coast.

Since the netflix company is in los gatos california, I live a little north of san francisco does that mean i will get my DVD's quicker since I live closer to them???

I've seen several reports of people in SF getting 2-3 day turn arounds (meaning you drop it the mail Monday, and you have your next DVD on Wednesday or Thursday). Compare this to my average turn around of 8-9 days, with my last mailing taking 12 days due to the holidays.

I'm gonna drop NetFlix in a month or so. I'm on the standard plan which previously was 3 DVDs with 2 "en route", so effectively it was a 5 vids out for $20. Anyway as all ya Netflix blokes know, they lopped off that 2 en route feature a couple of months back, so instead of 15 vids a month I'm getting like 10. OK, it's a 33% drop-off, but it was still a better deal than BallBuster. But now the large majority of my vid queue has gotten "short wait or long wait" on it (I have like over 100 in the queue). I think they are expanding their customer base, but forgot to expand their inventory at the same time. I could live with the drop-off, but it's no use if all the vids you want aren't available to rent.

I looked at Rentmydvd a while back (at the same time as when they dropped the 2-en route feature), and also DVDOvernight. Prices are about the same, but selection sucked compared to Netflix. Of course, if the titles are unavailable, then they all suck. I'm hoping that some big bloke like BallBuster will get into the scene with lowered prices to give these hobos some competition.

I am curently under the free trial of netflix now, It looks like I am going to like it, I already received my first DVD's. I have a questions can I BUY a giftcertificate since its cheaper and cancel my free trial right now and then open a new account with my giftcertificate with a different credit card and email???

I would think you could do that, since people move and stuff you can't track people by street address only, so they probably do it by CC# and email.

One word of warning though, I wouldn't expect so many titles to be 'Available Now' once you are a paying member. You get preferential treatment when you are a new member, my brother just joined (using a GC I got him) and titles that I have to wait for are available to him immediately. This defeats some of the purpose of a trial, but hey, enjoy it while you can.

I've been using them a little over a month and really like them. I don't get the new releases so service for me is quick. Typically I get the movie within 3-4 days. Nice thing is for me is that so far none of the disc skip like BlockBuster:)

I took mrbass' suggestion and switch over to rentmydvd.com from netflix. Now the shipping is a bit faster, and the customer service is great! But as today, March 07 02, I have about 31 DVDs (excluding the coming soon titles) in my wish list(similar to the que list in netflix), and none of them are available, they all are under the High Demand status. I am not even asking for obscure titles, all recent releases within a year or two. Another thing is that I have never received the DVDs that are on my top ten lists ever since the month I joined. Did anyone else at rentmydvd.com having the similar titles availability problem?

I am thinking about switching back...

First of all let me say, holy crap! For two reasons, first, I pulled up the forums to add a comment to this thread and was about to go digging for it to resurrect when I noticed it near the top, considering it's been dead for almost two months it's quite a coincidence.

And now for the real reason..I just got a DVD from netflix with a return address:

That's right, EAST COAST, finally. I found a couple of posts on Deja from early Feb by people in boston getting Worcester return addresses, but this is a first for me. I was getting pretty pissed that I wasn't getting anything from Worcester, since it's about 200 miles from my house, compared to the 3000+ miles to San Jose.

This is great news, but the bad news is that netflix selection appears to be worse than ever for me, out of the 100 items in my queue well over half are on wait, and only 3-4 of my top 20 are available now. Still an east coast distro center makes up for it.

PS. Even with most of my top 20 on some form of wait I almost always get something from my top 10, even if it takes a couple of days for them to ship it. Still I have been waiting for my number 1 selection for over a month, and it's on short wait.

I'm at the end of my 2week trial, so far I'm liking it, a little behind in some genres of what they carry (can't find "love hina" yet) but so far, it's been "order - 2days - watch - return - 2days - sendnext - 2days - etc" except for one disk which took 5days.

They have a two week trial also they seem about the same as netflix not nearly as good a web site.

It seems the last few times I've ordered they were shipped faster. Maybe it was a fluke but I wont complain.

My experience, about a month, has been very good. I do live in the Bay area so the turnaround is excellent. They will get the disc the next day and most often ship the new one that same day or the nest at the latest. so overall turnaround for me is two-three days. Only the most popular movies such as Training Day are on long wait. All the others I wanted were available. One was in the queue as short wait but it turned available while still in the list. Overall, I am extremely happy with the service in comparision to my other options: the closest Hollowywood/Blockbuster is 6 miles away in the next town. It cost more in gas, headaches, and time than 20 bucks a month. I turn about 3-4 movies a week, so it a hell of a deal as well as being SO convenient.
