Ok, here is where I thought I'd Start a listing of DVDs with seamless branching or multiple angles that are known to not work correctly with DVD-RB.

Shrek R1 Disc 2 (Widescreen) NTSC

Finished product is 3.86gig when removing Spanish and French soundtracks, and leaving all other audio tracks including DTS.

The movie appears to play fine in PowerDVD, but the multiple angles option in the special features' STORYBOARD PITCH OF DELETED SCENES won't play after you've selected your scene, and your angle.

In addition to that, this disc is giving me the weirdest error when burning. I've burned hundreds of DVD-RB "shrunk" discs, and I've never had a disc give me an error when I go to burn, but this Shrek disc errors out IMMEDIATELY, and refuses to burn in both RecordNowMax, and Nero. I thought perhaps it was my burner dying, since I've burned so many discs, but I had several other AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders full of different movies on my hard drive that I had been meaning to burn out for a while, so I spent last night burning them out without any problems.

Last night, before going to bed, I reformatted my DVD-RB Working Path drive, and had DVD-RB work on the newly reformatted drive. I started DVD-RB on Shrek again, just to be sure and let it run overnight. I just got up, and found that all of the above is exactly the same.

It would be great if someone else could verify this.

I'm using:

AMD 2500
512meg RAM
CCE 2.50
DVD-RB 0.65 (duh)
DGDecode.dll
Dynamically Assigned Cell Bitrates
I'm not stealing space for extras, or using half D1 and Half space for extras. It is just a basic rebuild with out French or Spanish audio.

Here is the status log file:

Interesting that VTS_05 had multiple angles/ILVU -- but there was no encoding done at all -- which means there is 475MB of what appears to be 100% interleaved video. That's the first time I've see that -- luckily I own Shrek R1 on DVD and will try it tonight. It looks like a good test disc.

I was planning to add forced reencoding of ILVU as an option at some point (my first few interim versions were leaning that way) -- the only reason I've hesitated is that the quality (at least in the examples I've used) took an unacceptable hit.

If large ILVU areas (this one is on the border) appear to be more common than I thought I may have to rethink.

Thanks.

You could also use an automated "autodetect". If the ILVU part is larger than a fixed number of MB, DVD-RB encodes it. Else it leaves it untouched.

As mentioned in another thread (which I believe I did not describe clearly), I have problems trying to do Stuart Little 2 (R4). It contains an interleaved cell within VTS1.

Since VTS1 is flagged to have interleaved cells, as jdobbs mentions, it will not be encoded due to the insignificant size reduction. But, however in this case it is the MAIN movie, and in addition DVD-RB wants to encode non-existant avs files of VTS1 as shown in my screenshot above.

Hopefully you can detect and fix this issue jdobbs, and thanks for your efforts.

I think its somewhat necessary to allow reencoding of the interleaved areas.
I have seen concert dvds with more than 3GB of that (if i can trust dvddecypters angle removement).

The only "V04*" in my working directory is V04.D2V.

Please let me know if there's any other information I can provide.

Thanks.

The same happened to me rebuilding Ghostbusters Pal Version in wich vts_10 is made by three interleaved cells and nothing more.
RB didn't touch it (about 400 Mb) and ended up with an undersized DVD(due to vts_10_1.vob that simply isn't there!).
I only had to copy/paste the VOB to the final Video_TS dir and get vts sector in order to have a complete backup.

Another little issue is related w/subtitles (I never use to remove noone of them but I was interested by the new window on the right bottom and wanted to try it).
I unchecked spanish subs in all vts and as a result they are still there after rebuild fase!

Bye!!!!

Beauty And The Beast Special Edition (R1)

This disc has 3 versions of the movie, and it seems to be the exception to the rule about how much the extra angles and ILVU add to the disc. DVD-RB tries to re-encode with a reduction of -19.4% (yes less than 0% ) and an average bitrate of 100kbps.

Inspired by the DVD-RB 0.65 Output Bug ? (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=84019) thread, I checked the root of C:, and found the missing V04*.AVS and .FLG files there.

I've since started another rebuild of something else, but when that's done I'll go back and retry DareDevil, copying the missing files to the working directory before proceeding with the second phase.

Hmmm... I'm not positive... but I think I may have to do some work on my ILVU processing. What do you guys think?

If it's possible, you could enable encoding of the multi-angle video streams (according to user selection or multi-angle size)
If the program shouldn't encode, you could simply demux video part of those vobs (as for rejiig's recoding)
It's just a suggestion, without knowing how your program works... so if I've said stupid things, just ignore my post ;)

This disc contains 3 versions of the movie: Theatrical, SE and Extended SE.

Everything went fine until during rebuilding. PowerDVD and WinDVD played the results fine. I can't check on my Apex until later tonight or possibly tomorrow.

However, IFOEdit's dvd player doesn't play back the angled segments correctly. One version plays fine, but the other is skips around and seems to play both angles interwoven together. I didn't check the third angle because it's an easter egg and I forgot the sequence to activate it. I'll have to look it up and check later.

EDIT: Since IfoEdit's DVD playback seems to be a hodgepodge of whatever filters are installed I thought this might be useful:
http://img46.exs.cx/img46/4421/Ifoedit.gif

Also, this seems to be another case of IlVu taking up too much space. video bitrate was around 1850kbps (though if I had just kept the 5.1 audio it would have been around 2150kbps). Although, the log below says 1383 for some reason. Output size was good, 4.34GB, but a little undersized from usual.

Our Lady Peace "Live"

Exact same issue as T2 above.

Angle 1 plays perfectly, selecting a different angle seems to cause all the angles to "play together" stuttering and jumping all over the place.

Really good for the first try I would say. :)

Oh no this is weird  we have the same disk (R1 ntsc)and mine bombed out with error 52 at the prepare step, have to look closer now. Found that rb 0.65 reset my encoder to RegJig , used decryptor in file mode and am still using the “older “ 2.5 avisyth. Will try to find out what’s happening.:(

edit: with cce it "works" but Regjig gives this error.

So you suggest to put an option in which the user can decide whether compress ILVU portions or not, right?

That could be a good compromise....

Another thing (if possible) could be to write an algorithm in DVD-RB which analizes the total amount of time that ILVU portions take on the dvd and then the program decides to compress them or not.

Just be be sure (this is for everyone... could you go into the [Options] area of the Rebuilder.ini file and add a line that says "ILVU_Extract=1" -- that will create a new .VOB named (VTS_XX_A.VOB, VTS_XX_B.VOB, etc.) in the working directory that holds the ILVU portions (deinterleaved). Then let me know how big that set of VOBs are. It will get generated during the "PREPARE" phase.

Note: The movie itself plays fine. The only "Bonus" options are to turn on "Enhanced viewing mode", where a symbol flashes on the screen during various portions of the movie, and if you click Enter on your remote, you go to a director's commentary. I've only watched the movie once, and didn't have that turned on, so I'm not sure where to go to to test this feature. I'll give a final "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" as to whether the backup was successful once I figure that out...

Ussually Shrink provides a good information about what titles go en each angle.

And you can use VobBlanker to see what titles are in each VTS. And as the angles are in VTS4 and VTS6, see what material is there...

Just an idea

@pg55555

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm actually taking a "quick and dirty" approach - I'm just changing the First Play PGC to jump directly to each title in VTS_04 and VTS_06, and seeing where it returns to in the main movie when the commentary segment is done.

- With this DVD: RB stoped the rebuilding phase.
The Problem was: there are only 4 files (item.ecl, REBUILDER.ECL, REBUILDER.INF, V01.D2V) in the working directory and nothing more.
I found all other files in the DVD-RB root dir but not in the workdir !? After copying everything in the work dir and starting again the rebuild it works fine. Other DVD with same settings: no problem.
- The size of the result was just 4042MB (or 4.239.917.056 bytes instead of 4.700.000.000 bytes) using CCE 2.67, VBR, 3 passes and CCETargetSectors=2260000?!
- With the beginning of the second cell, the selected german audiostream is gone (no sound anymore)?

No resize or cropping.

NTSC, Region 1, QuEnc.

Got "DVD Rebuilder experienced a buffer overflow. Error #0003. Process must abort." during the Rebuild phase. Seems strange, since I thought jdobbs had said this was one he had tested, so I tried again (starting with phase 1), and got the same thing.

I've started a third attempt, this time on a different machine.

Backing up "Kiki's Delivery Service". (Region 1; NTSC; QuEnc.) Result was slightly oversized. Went in to shrink some extras (from the DVD-RB output) with DVD-Shrink, and noticed that the Japanese audio for the main movie was 51 meg. This should have been stripped; I don't know why it wasn't. (Note that angle 1 is used for Japanese language and angle 2 is used for English.) Stripping that was all that was necessary to make the result fit on a DVD-5. (Messed up the audio in the angles, though.) Edit: Wasn't the stripping that messed up the audio; I burned the original DVD-RB output (dropping another VOB to make it fit), and the audio in the multiple-angle section was messed up in the same way - very much out of synch with the video, but otherwise sounding fine.

(DVD-Shrink shows that the Japanese audio for the original was 311 meg, so perhaps RB didn't take into account the size of what wasn't being stripped from the angles?)

What are you using to get the dvd into the PC?

does it play flawlessly even before ya run it through rebuilder?.
In my experience If i Have Used DVDdecrypter to get it in to the PC the Angles get screwed.

I've using Decrypter to rip DVDs with angles without a problem.

Probably you have selected the "Process Angles" setting in Decrypter.

I ran into the "error in UpdateIFO - shouldn't happen"-bug towards the end of the rebuild phase. No Preprocessing other then removing PUOPs - ripped with DVDDecrypter. The playback stopped right at the scroll title, so I assume it's related to angles.

If more information would be usefull, please let me know.

Oh, and I also liked more the standard interface, also because I have displaying problems (large fonts selected, because I run a pretty high res).
But my girlfriend likes more the new skin, which means something, because in general, she doesn't like RB at all... :)

The working dir contains 3 files:

Nothing was touched on the disc befor running the prepare phase.
On a sidenote i succesfully backed up sw1 and sw1 extras using this exact configuration. What i mean is that its working.
Also dvd-rb identifys the source as 4:3 which i belive is wrong.

I have the files backed up if they are usefull but i dont want flood te post with the infos from them if not needed.

Please check your Decrypter settings regarding to Angle processing. It is my understanding it does not have to be checked to RB process a multiangle DVD.

Jiant
I would suggest you to check, using RBOpt, the target size of the project, as well as what VOBID were going to be processed by RB, what bitrate they have and what percentage of the final video they represent.

As RB 0.65 does not compress the multiangle / ILVU VOBIDs, it can happen that if they are so big that together with the audio and menus they are bigger than the 4.37 GB of a DVD5, then the mathematical solution, although absurd, would be the compressed files to have a negative size.

It is my understanding jdobbs has realized that his decision to not compress the multiangle VOBIDs, although right in most cases, resulted in problems in those titles that have big muliangle / ILVU content. He is working on it

If open the file with rb-opt it crashes.
And as no avs and no flg files are created i think i'll just keep this for later. Also the rebuilder.inf only contains 4 lines.

Thanks for the ideas.

RB Opt couldn't handle the rebuilder.inf if it's based on a MA/INTERLEAVING DVD right now.

@eDealer
I've done just two dvd with multiple angles in the extras, and RB-Opt worked fine.
Could you send me the D2VAVS zipped of a DVD RB-Opt doesn't handle?
(obviously without the DVD-RB misplacing bug...)

Hi Mich,
shure.

I manualy copied the files in the right directory
but it also crash. Now, when I solved the output bug
with Troy, I also can open the rebuilder.inf in the
new prepared version?!

Was this bug also in another file??

mail is send to you with the old files.

RB Opt couldn't handle the rebuilder.inf if it's based on a MA/INTERLEAVING DVD right now
Excuse me, but it has worked for me. I've been able to use RBOpt 0.15 to check and adjust bitrates in The Matrix, Star Wars Episode I and There's Something About Mary, all of which have MA/ILVU .

So, if I'm right:
then the mathematical solution, although absurd, would be the compressed files to have a negative size.
As that it is impossible, RB would not generate a valid Rebuilder.inf file, and so RBOpt will crash.

Just as a way of checking my hipotesis, I would suggest try a movie only back: Use Shrink in RE-author mode, strip all audio excep one, strip all subtitles, process with "No Compression". And then process with RB. With some luck, after the striping there will be enough space in the DVD5 for the VOBID with MA/ILVU without compression plus the VOBIDs RB will compress to fit in it (a "positive" solution in the terms of my quote

@eDealer
The only lines in Rebuilder.inf you sent me are these:
[Status]
mode=1
Progress=2
CCEType=1
Encode_Progress=46

I think this Rebuilder.inf isn't correct, and jdobbs should look at this.
Does DVD-RB work with this particular DVD?
I think it can't rebuild - or it skips everything and just copies the original vobs.

Anyay I'll insert a check in next version to avoid the crash - but RB-Opt is useless for this backup.

You are right, my fault :( .
After solving the output problem, also the RB Opt. works fine.
As I already mentioned, I did not see any connection in that.

Please check your Decrypter settings regarding to Angle processing. It is my understanding it does not have to be checked to RB process a multiangle DVD.

Yeah, thanks for the hint, you were right. DVDDecrypter is a little queer here; when you select angle processing, it doesn't keep all the angles. Its prolly just me, but I would have expecteted the contrary. So not rb to blame in this case :) , only high density of user...

Could you please let us know what your results were? I am very curious because I also tried backing up disc 2 of Shrek (R1) tonight and it has been a major PIA. I really don't know how as much about DVD video editing as I would like, and I impatiently tried a million things, scattering GBs of files all over one of my drivers.

The first thing I did was rip all the files in "file mode" using DVD Decrypter. With IFOEdit I stripped the main menu VOB, VTS_01_00.vob down a bit, and then used the "VOB extras" feature to strip unwanted streams, VOB IDs, *and* I enabled the multi-angle processing, electing to keep only angle 1. I think that is where I messed up. During playback, I had strange results, like every scene was happening three times, in a different language. Poor description, I know, but I've seen teh same problem described elsewhere before. It doesn't seem like any of the angles playback properly indepedent of each other.

From your post, it is not clear if you even tried to process a working source with RB, as the behavior you described looks as your IFOEdit output was screwed. If so, please post in the IFOEdit forum

This thread is about unsuccessfull backups of multiangle DVD with RB 0.65, in which you KEEP the angles.

In general it is recommended to NO pre-process the sources before RB (except for the ripping), even when most of the times RB will work just fine, but sometimes it will have problems.

I apologize. My post was not related to DVD-RB. I had located this thread from the search engine and unwittingly forgot to check to which sub-forum I was posting. FWIW, I did solve the problem (I mistakenly did not strip out a couple of the VobIDs).

Remove some audio tracks.
You have a negative space for video!

Probably you have to split on two discs...

You can try using another tool to compress menus, or removing something.
Else you have to use a DualLayer.
Sorry, but there are some dvd's which can't be copied easily.

I did a little better than jiant. I blanked out some small VTSs and Numenu'd the 400MB menu down to 225MB. Somehow I doubt even procoder will save me on this one. :)
