Playing movies without codecs - filters?

Hello,

I was trying to fix my friend's computer, on which not even one movie could be displayed and found out that even without codecs WMP was able to display something (movies are all in green :) ). I guess that some kind of filters need to assist in movies playing in that case.

I installed ffdshow filters. It helped a little. Some of movies are displayed correctly. Why only some of them?

Moreover VLC player is unable to display movies properly (I have never had any problems on my computer with that player - in fact it was capable to play everything properly without any codecs installed).

How to find out what is going on? I removed all codecs and codecs packs.

hmm... start with the type of media you're trying to play and work backwards from there.

and give media player classic a try. it's better than stock-standard MS bloatware.

ffdshow should be handling most movies you're likely to find (at least in avi/ogm/mkv formats). if some things can't be played, perhaps you need to install the appropriate splitters as well.
