Broken MPEG-1 file... how to fix?

Hi all:

Sorry if this isn't the right forum. I'm having problems here trying to play an MPEG-1 file. When loading it with VirtualDub, it says "File ended unexpectedly during parsing - file may be damaged or incomplete"... and sure enough, it plays only the first 5 minutes or so (despite being a 800 Mb file). I have tried so far:

-Reencoding it with TMPGEnc. It produces another 800Mb file, but when playing, the image freezes at the 5 minutes mark and stays there.
-Using the simple multiplex option of TMPGEnc. It creates a 5 min., 50Mb. MPEG-1 file... and that's it.
-Using the "MPEG-Corrector" tool at videohelp.com. It also creates only a 5 min., 50Mb. file.
-Using FlaskMPEG. It hangs while trying to play the film beyond the 5min. mark.

The question is... what else can I do? As I said, it is a 800Mb. file, so I'm pretty sure it doesn't have only 5min. of footage :-), and it's obvious that there must be some corrupt frame (or other wrong information) around the 5 min. mark, but so far none of the tools I've tried have been able to work around it.

Also try my VirtualDub-MPEG2 (http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable). It has a rewritten MPEG parser which might be able to work through the corruption.

Well, Virtualdub-MPEG2 didn't work; it tried to load it and failed saying "cannot load file: CRC error". When trying to copy the file to another location in my HD, Windows showed also the same error (CRC).

Now, I know that this means that the file is probably corrupted, but the odd thing is that the file came originally in a set of RARs, and I checked them (using WinRAR's "Test" option) and it gave no errors. How could this be? And... erm, what else could be done about it?
