Hello!
I have studied user interfaces (computer science) quite a lot and know some basic, IMHO rebuilder interface could be way better.
I have used DVD rebuilder v 0.64a with CCE SP 2.67+ couple of times, altought the colors of the GUI are horrible it works quite well with ONE disc encoding, BUT when you have multible disc it is not so easy anyway..
First I will create two typical user scenarios,
-User wants take a backup copy from his dvd-movie.
-User wants to take copy from multiple movies,
In both cases user usest dvddecrypter to copy 3 movies E:\ drive
So user decrypts data to E:\DVD9\MOVIE_1\, E:\DVD9\MOVIE_2\, E:\DVD9\MOVIE_3\
-User removes macrovision etc.
-Also user has plenty of discspace
-Also we can assume that the only purpose of the using decrypter is to make temp copy and shrink this temp copy to smaller space, so there should be option to make source and destination directory same, the orginal temp movie is replaced with smaller version. (after reencoding has been done there is only the VIDEO_TS structure, nothing extra like AVS etc.
-Or Also some prefix support to Output would be nice, like E:\DVD5\MOVIE_1\, E:\DVD5\MOVIE_2\, E:\DVD5\MOVIE_3\
So user just wants to tell remaker that in this directory are 3 movies (directories), and structure to the VIDEO_TS data is E:\DVD5\MOVIE_1\VIDEO_TS\ etc.
Please shrink these movies to E:\DVD5\MOVIE_1\VIDEO_TS\ etc using these global options. Its very complicated and annoying to make each of the directories own project file and after that add them to the project catalog.
-We can assume that only settings the user may want to touch in different movies is the the soundtrack and subtitle.
User may want to remove some of them. IMHO my oppinion is that subtitles may be in peace thay don't take so much space, and he menu structure works nicer.
I don't know details about dvd inner structure, BUT it seems that sometimes if you just remove subtitle or audiotrack the dvd playback may be very strange, like if the movie has spanish and english soundtrack and the english is "default" soundtrack. If you remove the english then the movie does'nt have sound at all if you don't change the sound to english before movie even starts. And PUO may cause that you can't change audio during playpack.
Is it possible to "link" removed audio-track to user desirable existing track? (this would remove no sound problem) Is it possible to define the "original" soundtrack (specially menus would work nicer). Very often it's english but not, not allways. Like Das Boot is deutsch movie and original language is deutch, if I want to preserve Original deutsch language, does the DVD format identify the "default" or original sountrack?
Now I can only select preserve English, but could I just say that preserve Original language!
Also In film menu there might be selection links to lets say audio commentary, could it be possible to handle these situations?, like relink removed audio stream id to existing id?
In my case usually the dts and dubbed foreign language goes. Subtitles stays, it's very easy and fun to learn language with subtitles. Also extras are reduced to 25% Everything else stays.
So trying to say that Rebuilder "workflow" shoud be more process orientated,
FIRST you define global settings, that are for all movies.
THEN you just drag and drop the ripped DVD directories to INPUT section, then program automaticly suggestest OUTPUT directories in OUTPUT section. (INPUT AND OUTPUT DIRECTORY PEFIXES CAN BE DEFINED IN SETUP). Then you can clink some directory in INPUT section and see structure of this VIDEO_TS and make so extra settings, mainly regarding the subtitle, extra saving and audiotracks. (easy settings).
Also making ISO files ready to burn to maybe E:\ISO directory, some prefix syntax could define this, the LABEL of the disc could be the label of the directory where the VIDEO_TS is, this the default behavior of the dvddecrypter.
It might be that something is missing, but in this way it would be childs play to first rip 5 DVD:s to harddrive, add them to rebuilder and press transcode... about 3 cliks, including the drag&drop :-).
Rebuilder is good program, just needs some GUI tuning... Best GUI: will born when the user and what user wants to DO is in mind :-)
