View Full Version : Assinging number keys to menu buttons?

Hello,
I do need your help with a specific thing I want to achieve:
Is there a way to assign number keys on the remote to the buttons in a menu? So that if you press the respective button on the remote keypad the respective title is played, or at least highlighted in the menu?
I hope this is doable and this is not a too stupid questions - I checked out the guides and did a search but did not find a related topic.
Thanks in advance - Morlock

You can't "assign" a number to a button - what you can do is to reorder buttons in such a way that they have indexes you would like them to have. Can be done with MenuEdit or DvdReMake Pro. If you use one of these programs the easiest way would be to export buttons layout (.mbl file) and to edit it - it is just a text file. Then import it back.

Only if you create a dvd from scratch you can assign numbers to the buttons with (for example) dvdmaestro. The number 1 will be assigned to the first button you make, number 2 to the second and so on and on.. But it will be auto action so it will start wat ever is set to that button.

Hi,
thanks Dimad and MSC_Alex for your replies. I will try to see if I can change the idexes respectively.
Strange that on my current DVDs (authored with Tmpgenc DVDAuthor) if I press a number button it shows the sign for "prohibited operation". Maybe I just need to check how to get rid of that.
Iīll at least now know how it should work and hope am able to figure it out.
Thanks again - Morlock

Check with ifoedit, VTSM_PGCI_UT rootmenu Prohibited user operations

Hi again,
still working on figuring it out ...
My DVD obviously does not have root menues but only a title menu (I think).
Looking with ifoedit in VIDEO_TS.IFO I found the one and only menue in a section VMG_PGCI_UT - PGC-Menu_2.
There the prohibited user opereations are set to 0. Still I canīt select the buttons in that menu with the DVD player.
I was able to see the button numbers with MenuEdit, and the order would be OK for me - so my main issue seems to be the prohibition.
Does selection via number key not work in a title menu?
Sorry if I donīt know the DVD structure in and out as much as I would like to, sometimes I just donīt get what goes where ...
Thanks again for your kind help - Morlock

normaly it's in the vts1 ifo, check which vob has your menu, it should be in the VTS_0X_0.vob Where X=1 most of the time. So you have to open this X ifo with ifoedit. When you found de menu prohibited user opereations dubbel click it, then you can set the flags off.

Hi,
the menu seeming to be the title menu - so I found it in video_ts.vob.
I changed whatever user prohibition I could find in the respective video_ts.ifo - but it still is not working.
Are you sure the button selection via number buttons is supposed to work there? Maybe I check it out with some commercially made DVDs.
Any idea what I could do wrong?
Thanks - Morlock

There are PUOPs in vobs as well. You can check what they are with VobEdit, DRM Pro would be probably the easiest way to set them. At least I'm not aware of any other program that can set (not just clean all) PUOPs for cells in vob file.

Are you sure the button selection via number buttons is supposed to work there?I'm sure that it is NOT possible to select menubuttons with the number keys of the remote. There is no way to instruct the IFOs or VOBs to use the number keys.
The numeric pad of the remote control is used only to let the user input a title or chapter number, the parental managment password, and things like that. It is used also to navigate in the menus of a VCD. For a DVD, you need to use the arrows and the Enter (or Play) buttons to select a menubutton.

Then please explain how you select the easter eggs on (for example) T2 ?

Hi,
thanks for your inputs - how much ever I look for user prohibitions on my Tmpeg-Enc DVD Author DVD, I canīt find any that are left.
I ran the DVD through DVD Decrypter in file mode and instructed it to remove all user prohibitions (also in .vobs) - still not working.
Looks like in order to implement the selection by number key you have to implement something else that I donīt know.
Iīm close to giving up on this and just use the cursor keys ....
If you have any more ideas - let me know -

@Msc_Alex
The menubuttons numbers are used internally to setup the up/down/left/right links between menubuttons. They are not supposed to be used directly from the remote. This means you have to use up/down/left/right keys on the remote to go from one button to another.
To go to an easter egg, you have to use the same arrow keys. But sometimes, you must press them in a specific order to find the easter egg (ie. you must go through several hidden buttons before reaching the easter egg).
I have never saw a player able to highlight a menubutton with a number key.
And I have never saw any menu with numbers displayed in the video. If it is possible to call the menubuttons by numbers, the user must know which number key to press, no? And how do you select a button number > 9? Are you supposed to press two buttons? Furthermore, the button numbers are not the same when a widescreen menu is played on a 4:3 or on a 16:9 TV system. Strange, no?
My conclusion is that this part of the Maestro guide is wrong. (There are other errors and omissions in Maestro, so don't thrust it too much.)

Well Morlock60 i know it works on my player. Just played 10 dvd's and it worked on the main menu on 9 of them. That could also be the problem. Just load a couple of dvd's and press the keypad numbers (1- number of buttons).
The one it didn't work with was spiderman, thats not a easy menu. I also tried ifoedit on it like this:
http://img99.exs.cx/img99/3362/IFO1.gif
Also on the other LU's
And save.
But it didn't work
Ok but the 9 other ones did, and all my dvdMaestro projects work.
So first check your standalone dvdplayer, if it works try dvdmaestro.
And never give up

Then I guess my standalone is unique because it works.

Do you have T2 ?

Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Apart from the theatrical version and the Special Edition cut of the movie, Artisan Home Entertainment's phenomenal Ultimate Edition of 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day' also contains a third cut of the film, presented as a hidden feature on the disc.
Insert the side/disc that contains the feature presentation and from the disc's main menu, select 'Special Edition' which brings up a dedicated menu to access the film's Special Edition cut. On the right hand side of the panel you will notice some weird, unreadable symbols that will give you access to the hidden feature - actually they are roman numbers.
Take your remote control and press the key combination '82997' - the date of Judgment Day in the movie - and the symbols on the side should change to the text 'The Future Is Not Set.' If they don't, please make sure to press the 'Enter' key on your remote control after every one of the digits.
Or starwars I

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
With the big Special Edition release of 'Star Wars: The Phantom Menace,' Lucasfilm is also delivering some hidden features, which are quite exciting and hard to find if you dont know where to look.
First of all, as you may have noticed, the first disc features 3 different themes for the menu system, which is randomly selected when you insert the disc in your player. However, you can override the randomizer and select which one you want to see. When the FBI warning appears, press the '2' key on your remote control to activate the Tatooine theme. Press the 'Audio' button to activate the Naboo theme and press the '2' button twice to select the Coruscant menu theme.
Also, on the first disc, go to the 'Options' menu and type '1138' using your remote control. On some player models you will have to press '10+', '1' and wait for the pause as the player accepts the input. Then press '3' and wait for the pause. Finally, press '8'. This will take you to some incredible bloopers from the movie, complete with DVD credits.
So I must be the only one who is able to see these eggs :D

I don't think you are right on this. Apart from the fact that it does work on players (I've been doing some tests working on MenuEdit) there is a special field in nav-packs:
# of numericaly selected buttons (at offset 0x009f)
@Msc_Alex: I wonder if this makes the difference for one of your disks
And I have never saw any menu with numbers displayed in the video. If it is possible to call the menubuttons by numbers, the user must know which number key to press, no? Well, one can have different navigation commands for different display modes - why not buttons order.

# of numericaly selected buttons (at offset 0x009f) OK, guys. You are right. I forgot this option in the VOB.
I suppose that the easter eggs in Terminator 2 or Star Wars are also accessible if you know the correct sequence of arrow keys. However, I may be wrong: I don't have thoses DVDs (I hate commercial horrors like that , and the zone 2 editions are probably different).
[EDIT:] Tested again with 3 standalone players (Sony, Panasonic and Kiss) and some PC players (IfoEdit, Windows Media Player 10 and Classic, Mark's Tray DVD Player, Zoom Player Pro, WinDVD). None of them worked, except Mark's Tray DVD Player and WinDVD. So, my advice is: do not use this feature (or at least do not rely on this feature, and be sure all buttons are accessible using the arrow keys)!
And the Maestro manual should say "some players" instead of "most players". This is a fact. ;)
@Msc_Alex
So I must be the only one who is able to see these eggsUsing the number keys, yes, probably! :D
No, of course I can imagine that some players are using the number keys to select the buttons. I am probably out of luck with my players. :(
BTW, what is your standalone player?

Got a old Labway (5 years) which I have upgraded a lot :D
I know you shouldn't trust every player, and would never made
a menu this way. Powerdvd just highlights the buttons, my standalone activates them.
Dimad Thanks for the tip (and your great programs), I knew there was more in the vob,
now a hole new world opened after I clicked the button flag in Vobedit

Hi all,
thanks for this interesting conversation.
wonder if it works for Morlock60 As soon as I understand what you guys discussed - maybe :D
Here is what I know so far:
- I checked some commercial DVDs and they allow to select buttons via the keypad of the remote of my standalone DVD Player.
- The DVDs authored with TmpegEnc do not.
- I think I removed all user prohibitions from the TmpegEnc DVDs
- There is a flag # of numericaly selected buttons that obvisously is in the VOBs - I will search for it.
What do I have to do with it? Anyway to make it work for my already authored DVDs?
I think we are getting there - thanks for the information - regards -

You can change the value with VobEdit, in the right navigation pack. (You have to enable the Buttons checkbox.)
If you want to change this for an animated menu, you're out of luck: you will probably need to change it in all NAV packs of the cell.

Hi,
of course my menu is a animated one :D
So sounds like I can give up then - right?
Well - never thought it to be a big deal anyways - but interesting to see that is has found some interest here.
I was hoping for a easy solution - but if this does not exist I can live with using the cursor keys.
Thanks for your research though - Morloc

Did you check the Vob ? I was hoping this was it ? For my spiderman disk, this wasn't an option (so many cells in 1 vobid).
Open the video_ts.vob with vobedit, select demux ->by cellid
then check the new vobs which is the menu.
Open this vob with vobedit and check Buttons scroll down to 009f what does it say ?

of course my menu is a animated one
So sounds like I can give up then - right?Maybe you could try to change the value in the first NAV pack only. With some parameters, it is sufficient.
Open the video_ts.vob with vobedit, select demux ->by cellid
then check the new vobs which is the menu.Did you demux the VOB only to be able to find the NAV pack easily in VobEdit?
If so, load the DVD in PgcEdit, right-click on your menu PGC and select Show Menu Buttons. Put the cursor over the topmost button of the dialog. A tooltip will appear with the LBA number of the first NAV pack of the cell. In VobEdit, scroll to this LBA to find your NAV pack.

Hi,
Iīm trying to follow you guys .... but I got lost:
If so, load the DVD in IfoEdit, right-click on your menu PGC and select Show Menu ButtonsAre you sure you are referring to IfoEdit? I have never seen my right mouse button do anything in IfoEdit.
I know my menu PGC is PGC-Menu_2, Iīll now try the demux-way of MSC Alex to see if I manage that.
I keep you posted - Morlock

Hi,
I demuxed the video_ts.vob with Vobedit (by Cell-ID) and loaded the resulting VOB into Vobedit again.
Double clicked on the first line in Vobedit and in the upcoming Hex-Edit window looked up address 9f, which is 00.
And now? I guess I could change it - but then how do I get the vob back into the DVD structure?

PgcEdit, of course.
(corrected in the post above)
And now? I guess I could change it - but then how do I get the vob back into the DVD structure? You don't need to demux the VOB. This is what I tried (badly) to explain: use PgcEdit:p to find the LBA, and edit directly your original file.

20th October 2004, 22:39
ha r0lZ your program is powerful like ifoedit + vobedit :D
you are right Did you demux the VOB only to be able to find the NAV pack easily in VobEdit?
Ok if you want to put it back( with vodedit) open de first demuxed cell with vobedit
(I know the long way) and select edit-> join vobcell files
save and rename to video_ts.vob and past it back in your original structure. And try again :p

Hi again,
should have guessed that you are referring to PGCEdit.
Downloaded the latest version - loaded the DVD - went to my menu pgc, clicked "Show buttons".
PGC Edit shows the buttons but the tooltip that is appearing when I rest over the button 1 only says "(JumpSS)Jump to VMGM PGC 3", it does not show me the LBA of the NavPack.
Iīll hang on - now that I got into it ... :-)

Place the mouse over the topmost button of the window (showing the PGC label, and VOB/Cell IDs), not the menubutton in the video preview.
You may also find the LBA number by looking in the Info -> Menu Buttons Commands dump. You have to know the VOB and Cell IDs, though.

Hi again,
I canīt believe this - I did what you said - and it actually works!!!
I can navigate the buttons with my remote control number keys - cool. Now I just need to pay attention to the button indexes (or get DVD Remake Pro as I understand to reorder them).
I did not think this was possible after the initial discussions - you guys rule!
Thanks a lot for bringing me a step closer to "The DVD - MY way!".
