What I enjoy the most about ffdshow is that I can install one program, and play back pretty much every video format out there. And now with audio decoding support, it's even better.

What I am looking for now is a similar all-in-one demuxer that can open any type of container, OGM, MKV, VOB, MP4, etc.

I used MPC for a while and it worked great, but it had a couple of user interface quirks that ultimately made me go back to WMP6.4. Plus I'm just starting to branch out away from AVI, so I'm still learning about the different containers.

The ideal soultion would be to include demuxing into ffdshow. How likely is that? Is there another program that is similar to MPC, in that it can open all of the formats, and also be nice and simple? I'm a minimalist.

Well, thanks all!

mplayer, can't get much more minimal. Has demuxers for mp4, mkv, ogg, ogm, etc. and built in decoders for most stuff. Things like Real Video, WMV9, etc. can be handled by external DLL's.

I'm not sure if a directshow de/muxer could be built around libavformat in the same way it was around lavc. That certainly would be pretty cool, though.

It would be a really nice idea. The easiest the best (specially if it loads CPU as light as ffdshow). Now we only need ffplayer :D

Or even better - FFDShowSplitter. :)
MP4 especially needs something like this, because there is only one splitter for MP4 that is capable to connect with different decoders is 3ivx. I hope that Ahead will make their parser more friendly. Otherwise Nero users will have to use only Showtime player to have all the features (multiple audio, subtitles, chapters) when H.264 will be released. But I have a bad feeling about it. :(
Is it even theoretically possible to make DS splitter out of any existing MP4 reading program?

This would be so cool.It is needed for MP4,MOV and NSV playback under directshow.
Rober2D2 "ffplayer" under windows exists. It is called mplayer - The movie player not only for Linux but for windows too!It includes the following drivers:ffmpeg, dshow, vfw, qtvideo and realvideo. It uses libavformat for spitting videos too. There is no mpg, mpeg, vob, dat,ts,pva,
mp4,wmv,asf,mov,qt,rm,rmvb,nsv,avi,ogm,mkv,nuv,roq,vivo,flic I couldn't play with mplayer.Also mplayer's speed simply rocks!
