what's a good filter for these badly mastered dvds?

I got the 'we where soldiers' dvd and 'the count of monte cristo' dvds.
both north american (r1 I think).

'wws' shows lots of blocks during dark scenes.
'tcomc' shows these nasty blocks during the steam room scene.

are there any filters that could smooth these out and without affecting the overal quality of the output?

when i first got these dvds i thought something was wrong with my dvd player for showing such nasty blocks on my tv. then i noticed that everywhere i saw it; it looked the same. even on payperview and stuff. so i guess it must have been a bad master encode or something.

try mug funky's deblocker script, I've used it with excellent results myself on those type of cheap sources :)

I second niamh's suggestion, funkydeblock is an awesome deblocker. You could also try Deblock from MVTools as well.
