quote jdobbs
"- Note: It continues to be my intention to provide this package as freeware. But it is my belief that I should somehow reward those to took the time and effort to contribute to this project, either through donation or extraordinary testing support. In the future all new releases will be made to a list of VIPs/donators first. After some period (maybe 30 days) that version will be released in a "public" version. Those who helped through donations and special beta support deserve recognition. This is my way of saying "Thanks." THE FIRST DONATOR RELEASE (IN A COUPLE OF DAYS) WILL SUPPORT MULTIPLE ANGLES AND ILVU (I've completed it and am testing it now).
"
I think this is exactly the way you should go. Providing as freeware is extremely generous, and you deserve contributions. I am contributing today.
-THANK YOU

@ jptheripper
where did you find this announce?
30 days is a little too long cause new versions are released often
by the way, if jdobbs needs some tests with multi-angles and interleaving, i'm ready;)
i have both original DVDs with 3 angles and interleave source which can be tested with DVD-RB

The only sad thing I'm seeing is that people are donating solely to get the new versions. I know myself and others donated long before and did so cause the work and effort from JDobbs was amazing. It wasn't just to pay him off so we got what we wanted, it was to show support for his project. I was happy to give what I could in order for J to continue this, and I still am, it just kinda sucks that people are just now making thier first donations because of this announcement.

Way to take a positive thing and view it negatively.
I have supported jdobbs (though not financially) since the very beginning, and this step made me realize i should have contributed long ago, as I think it has done for others.
Lets just be positive and supportive

The only positive thing about it is that JDobbs is finally getting some more payment for his work, not that you "realized that you should have a long time ago". If you were such a long time supporter, why didn't you donate then?

@VampHuntD
Everyone has their own personal reasons for not donating earlier but you have to give them a benefit of a doubt. Donating should be always be positively encouraged and not forced upon. You're treating them like bad guys. Even bad guys deserve a right to change their ways. Let's think positive. At least, they ARE giving a donation. Better late than never, right? I think you are taking this too personally but you do have a right to your opinion.
Who knows? There might be another person stepping forward and saying "Hey, thanks for donating but really, that's not enough!".
@jdobbs
It's been a long time coming with multiple angles and ILVU. You deserve every positive contribution with DVD-RB. Whether it's a pat on the back, a free dinner, or a million dollars. People can only give what they can. Thank you for still keeping DVD-RB free to the world! IMHO, you already belong in the DVD Backup Hall of Fame. Along with Derrow, dvdshrink, LIGHTNING UK!, coujo, jsoto, r0lZ, and many others! (you know who they are) ;)

@2Cool,
Yes I understand that not everyone has the money to donate to the project and yes I understand people have different reasons, what I said was it's said that the step even needed to be made because some people weren't going to donate unless it meant no new versions for them. I didn't suggest that any of the people here were doing so, because there are individual circumstances, however there are plenty of others who won't and could easily afford to. That's what I was commenting on, althugh I do understand how it was taken differently due to my harshness.

I agree with everyone for different reasons
I guess my reason for donating now was that i heard in jdobbs words his frustration, and that unfortunately he had to temporarily withhold releases b/c of lack of contributions. I realize I was part of the problem b/c I had not donated. I fixed that error. I hope others do as well.
THe ILVU and multi angle had little to do with it (i strip angles anyway to save space). I posted it in the header with hopes of it getting more attention and getting more sideliners like me to contribute, regardless of the reason.
TO get back on track. Major kudos to jdobbs.. you have earned contributions, sorry i didnt donate sooner.

I just donated too, and sure it was partly because of jdobbs enticement of access to newer releases. But my question to VampHunt is, why is this so wrong? I feel it's a perfectly good reason to donate. In fact I've never contributed to a donationware program EVER, but lately I've been using this program non-stop to try and work out the bugs in it and I just think it'd be cool to be part of the beta testing team.
I guess my other question is, what exactly is ILVU? ;)

I seriously doubt that anyone will have to wait 30 days to get it.

I don't want to say it's wrong, but it's not nice. Allow me to explain. It's not fair to JDobbs to contribute now solely/partly on the basis of getting new versions when you've been using the program all along. Had people been donating, do you think he would have gone to that system? I donated a long time ago, and it wasn't much, but at least that showed I apprecaited the efforts, not getting new versions. I'll be donating again when I have the money for it. Any program that you use normally and is freeware probably deserves some kind of donation. So I understand not everyone can afford it, but if you have the money and you are using the work, then why not pay for the effort? I just don't think it's fair to donate more for your personal basis than the work that all of us have been using and helping along.

I don't think 'fair' really comes into it. It would be nice if people would just donate because they think jdobbs deserves the support. I think most users feel that way, but they don't donate because it's a bother. This new arrangement is a nice way to get them over that hump.
Also, I don't think jdobbs would be offended if the sole reason for a donation was to get access to the latest beta.

I assume you are talking about people putting it up on P2P or something. Hopefully those who have it will realize doing so will only hurt or even endanger development.

If I were you, I'd believe it... 'cause if things don't work that way it will be a pain in the a@# for everybody... I can assure you :devil:

Donating via pay-pal is not an option for every user. It states on my bank card "FOR ELECTRONIC USE ONLY", meaning it can only be used at a terminal. It's impossible for me to purchase anything over the web. Any suggestions on how to donate for people living with such systems?

The same problem for me. Since I started using DVD Rebuilder (it was version 0.11 I think), I tried to donate a couple of bucks, but unfortunately PayPAL only accepts payments via credit -or debitcards, and students in Austria like me usually don't have one... :( Is there any other way to send money to jdobbs, except using a scanner and send him a fax :D ?

I am not an expert programer, my job is Rf engineering, so I couldn't contribute in the software domain. But I could in pointing some minor errors and flaws. So I felt that I could only make difference by donating and giving Jdobbs motive to keep up. Donating just to get new versions is wrong, we may as well buy the software then. If he didn't need any help from people out here, he would sit at home, program this one to death and sell it for, say 49.99. But, the way he chosed, I think was right, more people, more eyes > better product.
More donations > more motive. So answer is simple, donate or help in any other way, it doesn't hurt!
Just my 2c.

Hi,
First I want to thank jdobbs for his extraordinay commitment and his great work.
I wish I could donate something to people like jdobbs and many others like DVDShrink, DVD Decrypter, etc, but I live in Colombia and Paypal does not work with our credit cards. Could you please get a way so we can use our credit cards directly to donate ? Living in the third world also means dollars are hard currency to us and we can not part with as many as this people deserve, but I would love to give my grain of sand to jdobbs and all this people that deserve it soo much.
Help us help you .
Regards and thanks again;

I think VampHuntD is absolutely right. For that reason I am not going to donate anything. I certainly would not want to be "not nice" or "unfair to JDobbs to contribute now".

@VampHuntD
Sorry, I know this is getting out of hands, but I *HAD* to answer... this sounds like when I was 10 years old or so and I saw girls fighting over "which one is the best BEST really really best friend of Cindy!".
I think we got the point! You=good guy because you didn't need the incentive to give money. People who give money since yesterday=bad (bad!) people.
I feel offended by your need to show your supreme virtue vis-a-vis the "others".
p.s.: I didn't give a damn penny to the maker of DVD-RB. I probably will if I ever have a real need for it.

p.s.: It was my last post in this thread.

I agree this thread has become sidetracked and I don't think any useful discussion will emerge if we continue down this path. If anyone wants to start a new thread on either multi-angle/ILVU support or beta access, how to donate, etc, feel free to.
