AviSource cannot open mp3

I always used a full codec pack made by a friend of mine. But since i had some problems i stepped over to installing things manually. All is fine and everything is playable in mplayer classic, with one exception. When i use Avisource on a divx or xvid i get the following error: "Error initializing audio stream decompression: The requested conversion is not possible." and "Check to make sure you have the required codec". With DirectShowSource everything works fine however, so i'm sure i got the corect codec (all these movies are mp3).
It seems like an easy enough problem, so i hoped someone had an easy answer for me :p.

hope this helps, check and...

install lame mp3 codec,
install fraunhofer mp3 codec
install ffdshow latest

and maybe morgan stream switcher,

one of these should satisfy the filter needed.

The problem is I already got Lame and Fraunhofer (gspot says they are correctly installed). fddshow i want to stay away from. The problem is Avisource somehow doesn't use them, while directshowsource does?

Are they visible in VirtualDub?

lame isnt a decoder
fraunhofer is most likely a direct show filter

you need an mp3 acm, there are some illegal ones around, but i dont think i can link to them.

WMP10 comes with fraunhofer pro BTW, so if you hack the registry and dont mind too much about DRM you can install that.

Lame is, Fraunhofer isn't. I'll try reinstalling it.

In reaction to StephanV: Lame also has an mp3 acm with an installer. I've got that installed.

like i said, lame acm isnt a decoder... its an encoder only.

fraunhofer should show up as "MPEG Layer-3", but if you install the DS-filter it wont show up as VirtualDub (and avisource too) is VFW based.

hehe... lameACM also crashes Cooledit pro/Audition. so it's best to keep away from it (though you're free to use the lame encoder, because it's the best there is).

get rid of morgan stream switcher. it's naff. use a decent media player (media player classic has it's own stream switcher which doesn't mess things up).

there's nothing wrong with ffdshow... no point staying away from it, as it's miles faster than divx and xvid's Dshow decoders, and has more tweaks available. it's a 1 filter codec pack (all you need is splitters for various media types, and ffdshow and you can play just about anything - all but the most obscure video, mp3, ac3, DTS, subtitles, etc).

Avisource uses VfW, directshowsource uses directshow. i think there might be a conflict in your ACM codecs or something, or maybe something's off in the avi file's header info. in control panel or even virtualdub you can check out a list of ACM codecs. make sure there's only 1 used for mp3, or there could be oddness (i've found lame and fhg/radium can coexist pretty well together). to be honest, mp3 has just always worked for me.

have you tried loading the avi straight into virtualdub without using avisynth. this _should_ be the same as using avisource, but if it works we can at least narrow the problem down to avisynth, in which case sh0dan might be able to track down a bug for you.

Thanks for the long answer. Loading files directly into Vdubmod doesn't create any problem.
I'll try your other suggestions soon, but now i have to go :).

Oh, and i do not have morgan stream switcher as far as i know and i already use mplayer classic (it rocks).

Load it in normal VirtualDub and press the play button. I'll bet you get the same error message.

Morgan Stream Switcher and ffdshow hold no relationship with this... there just isnt an ACM (an ACM that can decode) installed... quite simple. :)

Doh, i didn't press play, just skipped through the frames. If I press play it gives the exact same error :rolleyes:

You can extract the WMP10 setup file and then copy the Fraunhofer professional codec (l3codecp.acm) to your system32 folder. I haven't tried it, but I read it in the Hydrogenaudio Forums (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=26956&st=50). It goes like this:

No need for a registry hack. Just go to c:\windows\system32 and rename l3codeca.acm to l3codeca.bak. Then copy l3codecp.acm to l3codeca.acm (swaps the professional one in place of the old advanced one). Done.

I've tried avisource/directshowsource, I've got lame, ffdshow, even tried radium, but I just can't can't get avisynth to load mp3.

Any bulletproof ways of doing this?

Open your source in vdub, if in properties for audio, it doesn't say ACM Decodable, avs can't open it.
