What's your treatment of Friends?

I'm about to make a backup of Friends seanson 6 R2. This is the worst source I've ever have delt with. It's mentioned in the list of bad quality DVDs (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=73968). The problems are mostly (de)interlacing artifacts (I guess, I've got very little, almost no experience with this kind of artifacts) since its a NTSC->PAL convertion.

Enough said. I didn't mean to do a deep analysis of this DVD's quality problems since the idea with this tread was to find out if someone else have delt with this DVD and how. I would guess quite a few people own this DVD and maybe I'm not the the only one interested in knowing how to get a decent quality backup from it. All suggestions are apreciated.

So far I've tried out the different Field Operation Options provided by Gordian Knot. TomsMoComp(1,5,1) looked best to me but I'm really not sure at all if that is the right way to go. I've never needed any deinterlacing-filters before (lucky me ;) ).

Well then. Thats it. Now it's up to all you avisynth gurus with a special interest in a popular american sit-com. Do you have any suggestions? What do your freinds scripts look like?

Download TDeint from the Avisynth Development forum and try this: TDeint().Decimate(quality=3). AFAIK, this series is telecined so if you just deinterlace you'll have 25% extra frames that will do nothing but bring the quality down.

Decimate leaves me with a FPS at 20 instead of 25. And TomsMoComp still looks a little better to me than TDeint.

if possible, could you put a up a sample of the vob files? 20mb or so will do, no sound. you can use ChopperXP or cuttermaran or something like that to cut the stream up.

I'd seperate the fields and try to see if there is an order. if there is maybe you can telecine and decimate. I'd try out Telecine anyway.

I still would like to know if someone else has made a backup of friends. If so please post your script. Not just the deinterlaceing/teleclining but but degraining/sharpening as well (I'm not such a neewbie i that area as in teleclining/deinterlacing but it would still be interesting to hear what other people has done).

Omg, now i see what you mean. The movie is now progressive, but the artifacts of the conversion are terrible. I'm afraid TomsMoComp(1,5,1) will be about the best you'll get out of this. But i'm no expert, so don't take my word for it.

what kind of ugly conversion!

1) scenechanges are blended
I triedmy function repairPAL_TNG_DVD() on that, with mixed results.

2) if the source video is combed, the chroma is temporally displaced. I'll try to figure out, how to fix this.
this is the reason, why you are getting strange chroma-artifacts, when teleciding (fieldmatching) or deinterlacing the video.

Thanks for your suggestions but TomsMoComp(1,5,1) still handles some sceenchanges slightly better. I can't tell much difference between TDein(), IT() and rerepairPAL_TNG_DVD().

I hoped it would have looked better than it does right now. More suggestions appriciated.

EDIT: I'm having some troubles with using funkydeblock and limitedsharpen on the same time. I'll get some "access violations at 0x1146c1e2 attemting to read from 0x20470020". (well I'm not sure I want to use Funkydebolck anyway, but the access violation bugs me :) )
