View Full Version : Those o byte nasties in ifoedit

Good evening. Every backup I do, before resorting to D2S I rip the entire contents with DVDDecrypter and go into Ifoedit to see if I can gut the contents down with 'VOB Extras'.
Every one I do, IFOedit creates an empty ifo and vob for the menu files, as I am preserving the movie only. IFOedit tells me to delete these or face trouble, when I do 'get vts sectors'. I do this and all appears fine. I'm just wondering if this is normal for these two files to be produced each time, or if I am doing something wrong? In 'VOB extras' I use the optons advised in the guides.
Cheers

Anybody?
Additional info, I rip ALL contents with dvddecrypter and point ifoedit at that, maybe I should only be ripping with the main movie selection?
Later......
No ripping main movie only in dvddecrypter doesn't help, ifoedit then creates the empty menu file for me. Then it gives the same warning on 'get vts sectors'

Have you read the guides here (http://ifoedit.wh.fr0zen.com/guides.html)?
I followed the instructions and was able to strip and re-author whatever I wanted. I use DVD Decrypter 3.5.1.0 to generate an ISO of the DVD I want; then, I point IfoEdit to the VIDEO_TS.IFO file on the DVD. You can press "Play DVD" in IfoEdit to figure out which title sets you need.
Anyway.. the guides make everything pretty straightforward.
Sorry I am not more precise. ;)

Thanks for that. I have no problem identifying the title set I want or playing with PGC's when necessary etc.
The issue is the empty menu file that gets generated by ifoedit. When first picking up ifoedit quite a while ago I used the doom9 guides and this is basically the way I use it.

Are you using IfoEdit v0.96?

I have the same 0 byte VOBs bug. It occur only if the "AutoCopy menu-files to destination" option is enabled. It is not really difficult to delete the offending files, though. ;)
BTW, Derrow, could you change the AutoCopy menu flag to OFF by default? Or remember the last setting? Thanks.

Not sure if it is really a bug :) . It's true that the original DVD has not these files, but I think it is also true that the files are not offending the standard (although Nero doesn't like them). At least, I've seen a lot of commercial DVDs with these 0 bytes menu files.
If you don't like them, just delete them and do a "Get VTS sectors". Thats all.

Thanks all.
Yes I am using 0.96.
r0lZ the option you mention, do you mean 'create empty menu-tables on 'create new ifo's'' ? under the IFo creation setting. If so it is already unchecked for me but the effect still happens.
I was just concerned that I was creating uncompliant dvd's by removing this stuff and not addressing the issue, as I have had some issues with playback on some disks and I haven't yet tracked down which methods are causing the issue. If the general opinion is delete and don't worry, then that is fine.

If WinDVD or PowerDVD is able to playback what is inside the VIDEO_TS directory, is it enough of a proof that the file set is "DVD compliant"?

@2COOL
I never really paid attention to that. I am just now making encoding tests with The Matrix. There are a couple of VOB files that are empty. I have some DVD+RW lying around. I could make some tests.
What about ImgTool+DVD Decrypter? That combination chokes on 0 byte files?
But, the original question from equilibrium was:
The issue is the empty menu file that gets generated by ifoedit.
And I believe jsoto is right when saying it is okay to have 0 empty files.

If WinDVD or PowerDVD is able to playback what is inside the VIDEO_TS directory, is it enough of a proof that the file set is "DVD compliant"? Unfortunately, not. Even more, in my experience, SW players are much more tolerant than a settop. In some cases, a SW player is able to play your compilation, and a settop is not..

@jsoto
Not sure if it is really a bugMaybe the IfoEdit's 0 bytes VOBs are not a bug, but IfoEdit itself doesn't like them! So, there is a bug somewhere in IfoEdit: it should either not create them, or accept them.
In addition, the IFO must be filled with some informations if you want to keep the empty VOB. This is not done by IfoEdit.

r0lZ the option you mention, do you mean 'create empty menu-tables on 'create new ifo's'' ? under the IFo creation setting. If so it is already unchecked for me but the effect still happens.No: it's "AutoCopy menu-files to destination" in the VOB Extras Options dialog (when doing a strip).

but IfoEdit itself doesn't like them! Depending on what are you doing, so you are right, IfoEdit is not coherent.
