View Full Version : DVD2DVD conversion time

This is the first time I have used this feature as I have recently acquired a DVD burner. I want to back up a 90 minute movie, but it is taking like forever on the video encoding (TMPGEnc) portion. The estimated time was like 18 hours.

What I would like to know if this is the expected time or should I change settings?

The hardware I am using is an Averatec 5400
Athlon XP 2800+ (Dublin core I believe)
512 MB DDR
40 GB HD

Can you post you configurations to able us to see what's wrong?
...anyway I'd like to advice you to use CCE and D2SROBA with DVD2DVD (You'll be able to do your backup in 2, 3 or 4 hours at the most) and I might want you defrag your HDD too :)

Actually it is still going. Due to the little activity I used on the computer, the time estimate of 18 hours is going to increase. When it is finished--hopefully tomorrow morning--I can send a log. But as far as I can recall, I believe in the Misc. tab, I chose DVD to DVD and left other things to default.

You are right in one thing, the HDD can use a defragmentation. The Massively Fragmented Table (MFT) is in 69 fragments ... I guess I will schedule an offline defragmentation tonight maybe after the completion of the conversion.

Yes I realize that it did run out of space, but when TMPGEnc finished there was over 10 GB space left. TMPGEnc took over 21 hours! After deleting some less important files, such as the *.VOB ripped from the DVD, the MkIsoFs command was able to finish. I should have unchecked the ISO image in the DVD image tab.

21 HOURS

Can you post here your TMPGEnc configuration? (the parameters on encoder tab)

I cannot find the encoder tab. I am using the "free" version downloadable at http://www.tmpgenc.net.

To answer your question better, I believe I left all the settings as default, which I understand may not be the most optimized setting.

In refering to the encoder tab of dvd2svcd... there you can access some configuration of your encoder...

The 18 hrs sounds outrageous to me. I use Clone DVD2 in conjunction w / AnyDVD and I typically split a factory DVD movie over two DVD-5 discs. From start to finish I can complete each disc in about 45 min so about 1 1/2 hrs to do one complete movie but possibly two hrs using an Athlon XP 3200+ CPU & 512 gbt DDR RAM. I was using an Athlon XP 2500+ in this setup clocked at the same speed as my new 3200+ ---2.2ghz and the speed was about the same.

As I mentioned I believe I left the settings as default:

Rate Control Mode: 2pass VBR
Motion search precision: Highest quality
VBV Buffer Size: 0
Number of passes: 2
Field order: Automatic
Enable padding is unchecked

Men... I used the same configurations and never had that time of encoding (when I used TMPGEnc)

The only advice that I got for you is... use d2sroba+dvd2svcd+cinema craft encoder (d2sroba only works with CCE...

You can always give it another try... after defrag your hdd but my advice will always be the best choice :)

Well after defragmenting the hdd, the performance of TMPGEnc did not change significantly. It took 30 hours to process a 133-minute movie.

IIRC, you can reduce 30-40% using High quality instead Highest in Motion search precision.

Another 50% using CQ mode, but the video file final size will not be accurate, you gan get an oversized or an undersized movie.

The fastest solution is, as Rockas said, D2SRoBa+CCE.

and was surprised to see the video conversion done in one night. Thanks.

@jsoto: I will try the configuration changes later.

If you are now using D2SRoBa+CCE, forget TMPGEnc. There are no settings in TMPGEnc able to do something so fast and with such quality.
