Disclaimer (not included in guide): Once proposed default subtitle is set to display, you cannot change to another subtitle using the subtitle menu , before or during. The only way to change subtitles during Title play is to use your remote's Subtitle button. :( This method would work great for movie-only backups though! ;)

Note: You must also set your default subtitle language on your standalone DVD Player.

Hiya 2COOL,

I have a disc where I wanted to force subpic stream 0 on. I followed your guide v2.0 with PgcEdit, and it works in my software player (Media Player Classic), but it does not work in my standalone SONY?

It's a quite clean-cut case:

The disc is authored in IfoEdit 0.971, it has 1 video stream (NTSC), 1 audio stream and 2 custom made subtitle streams (created with Srt2Sup). After authoring I've used SupRemap to edit the IFO file for the main movie in order to change the first four subtitle colours.

I then wanted to turn the first subtitle stream on by default and followed your guide. As the disc was authored in IfoEdit with the movie only, I didn't have any pre, post or cell commands in the VTST containing the movie. I added the SetSTN command as you described. As I wanted to turn stream 0 on, I followed step 14 a and d in your guide.

In my standalone Sony player, the disc starts playing, but no subtitles are shown. When I press the subtitle button on my remote, it selects stream 1 (the next stream) and displays the subtitles. If I press the button once more the subtitles are turned off (has reached the last stream) and if I press the button once more, stream 0 is displayed and shown correctly.

I'm not an expert with subtitles but maybe their size don't match your aspect ratio to your movie?

Ok, I've played it in IfoEdit 0.971. The first subtitle IS selected and is also turned on and shows correctly. Just like in Media Player Classic.

As for the sub size/aspect ratio: Well, that's not the problem. The video is NTSC and the subs are created for NTSC video in Srt2Sup. They're vertically aligned at the bottom of the video, but still in the picture.

As I wrote, they show fine and are turned on as they should in the software player. Also, in my standalone Sony, they show fine BUT they're not turned on by default, that's the problem. I have to trigger them with the subtitle button on my remote.

@cons - can you post your IFO PGC commands please (the ones in the title and where the SetSTN is encountered)?

However, my guess is that it's a player thing. Another case of "relucant subtitles", which many Pioneer DV player owners complain about.

Yep, when I get home from work today I'll post the exact pre command for that PGC. As I write in my initial post, there were no pre, post or cell commands before I added the SetSTN command according to 2COOL's guide.

I think it's a player problem, too. But it's weird that on other DVDs that I play on my Sony, I can go into a subtitle menu (part of the main menu of the disc) and select a subtitle and then press play movie, and the movie starts playing fine with the subtitles right away.

Maybe another command is used in these cases? Could it be that my Sony doesn't recognize or accept this command (stream 0 with 2COOL's guide):

Well, in your first example, you set the forced subpic. This is a verry special case, using a special stream that must have been defined as forced.
You should use stream 0, ON:

Hmm, then 2COOL's guide is wrong (or I am reading it wrong?) :confused:

If you have a normal subtitle stream as stream # 0 and want to turn this stream on by default, you shouldn't do step 14 a in the guide as it says, but instead step 14 b and c and select stream 0?

I'll try and change the SetSTN pre command to the setting you suggested, r0lZ, and burn the disc later tonight to see if that works better...

Yep, the "(SetSTN) Set Sub-picture stream = 0, on" pre command worked. The first subtitle stream is now turned on by default on my Sony standalone... Thx, r0lZ :) (and to 2COOL for the guide in the first place).

2COOL, unless I'm reading your guide wrong, you should consider changing it, so that step 14 b and c are always used, no matter which stream number it is?

I'm wondering what PgcEdit's function "force subpic 0" is for, then? If it's about selecting a stream with forced subtitles, why is it only for stream no. 0?

When I did the guide I tested it on my Sony and it worked then. There is a possibility that yours might have a problem with the forced sub-picture command. Have you tried your backup on another standalone?

Hmmm, sounds a bit like that the special "force subpic 0" command is for that very special case where the first sub stream is marked as "forced" (in PgcEdit in the domain stream attributes) and you want to turn that one by default.

Can anyone confirm that this is correct? If yes, I don't understand why this option is available for stream 0 only? But then it makes sence why 2COOL's guide doesn't work for me regarding stream 0.

Unfortunately, I have made the test of using the command to set the forced subpic 0, and changed the subpic 0 stream attribute to forced. But it doesn't work on my Sony.
I have also tested with "normal" and "normal caption", without any result.
Seems that the Sony DVD-S725D cannot handle the "forced" subpic.
Or is it something more to do? Or a flag in the VOB? :confused:

hm i always use this guide method and works well,

but i'm wondering can I further out the command by checking if NOSTN is set then ON by default

let say there is 4 SUP stream and a completly no subtitle DVD
0=english
1=chinese
2=chinese
3=korean

i setSTN == 0 (ON) default
then a chinese user went the movie and change to stream (2) chinese on remote, he again went to chapter menu after awhile and go back to movie.... and ended up in english stream again.

so I'm wondering is it possible don't set SET if user had change during movie later?

Ye, but you have to use a GPRM to record the fact that the subpic has already been set.

First, use Info -> GPRMs to find a free (never used) GPRM. Let's say that GPRM(15) is free.

Instead of using only the SetSTN command, you should use something like that:

Since the default value of a GPRM is 0, the first time those lines are executed, the condition of the first command is false, and the GPRM value is modified, and SetSTN is executed. The next time, the value of GPRM(15) is 1, and therefore the condition is true, and the SetSTN command is skipped.

Of course, be sure to modify the commands to suit your needs, and use your free GPRM. Also, the Goto should point to the NOP command.

I've been viewing these threads and trying to get some forced subtitles working on my DVDs. They work OK on the PC based players, but on my standalone Pioneer DVD player they don't get enabled.

What I've noticed when running a working commercial DVD (with forced subtitles) and one I've created through PCGedit, that it seems the working commercial DVD ends up setting SPRM 2 to equal 63 + subtitle stream number (starting from 1). Therefore on my commercial Star Wars DVD the forced subtitles are on subtitle track 8. Via PCGedit I see SPRM2 ends up as 71 and the SubPic field in the trace shows "7 On: en, forced" (where the subtitle tracks are numbered 0 thru 7.

If I try the "force subpic 0" option of PCGedit it ends up setting SPRM2 to 127 (I think this may be a bug), so I've stopped trying that option.
EDIT: I stand corrected. This post http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=567987#post567987 indicates that the "127" is correct.

Doing a standard SetSTN with a constant value for the forced subtitle stream, doesn't get the subtitles picked up by the standalone player.

If I set a GPRM to 71 (63 force + 8) and then SetSTN using the GPRM it all looks set correctly in PCGedit, and the PC based DVD player picks up the forced subtitles. But my standalone player still doesn't pick them up. Yet the commercial DVD forced subtitles get picked up.

Has anyone else found a solution for the differences between PC based and standalone DVD players and the handling of forced subtitles?

The term "forced" in Domain Stream Attributes doesn't mean anything special. It's only a label, like "director comments".

I still haven't understood exactly how the "force subpic 0" option is supposed to work. I have implemented it in PgcEdit for completeness, but I'm not sure the players handle it correctly.

Real forced subpics exist, but they are a totally different thing. There is a "forced" flag that you can set or clear for any individual subpic in a subpic stream (in the VOB file.) When a specific subpic is forced and the stream has been selected with SetSTN, but is OFF, it is displayed anyway. That means that you can use the same subpic strean in two different ways. If it is ON, all subpics are displayed. When it is OFF, only the forced subpics are displayed. And, of course, when another subpic stream is current (either ON or OFF), no subpics of the first stream are displayed.
You can toggle the forced subpic flags of some or all subpics of a stream with DVDSubEdit.

Usually, to force the display of all subpics of a specific stream, you have to SetSTN it ON. You can set it either by a direct SetSTN command, such as "(SetSTN) Set Sub-picture stream = 0, on", or by an indirect SetSTN command, using a GPRM. The correct value of the GPRM is 0x40 (64 in decimal) plus the number of the stream (zero based.) The 0x40 value is a flag that means "ON". So, to set a subpic OFF, you should set the number of the stream in the GPRM, without the additional 0x40.

In your DVD, the subpic stream #7 (remember, zero based) is used, and is ON, not forced: 64 + 7 = 71. Your player should display it, if you use a direct SetSTN command that sets subpic 7 ON or an indirect one that sets it to a GPRM containing 71. If that doesn't work, then it's probably a compatibility issue of the player. That's strange, though, as supporting correctly the SetSTN command is a must! Are you sure you haven't stripped some subpic streams out of the edited DVD?

Thanks for the info R0lZ. Yes, the "forced" subtitles for this DVD is just one of the existing subtitle streams that are displayed by default.

And this is what's leading to such frustration. In PCGedit Trace I can see that the default subtitle stream is correctly set and SPRM has the correct value when I play the DVD. And the PC based player selects the stream by default - it's just the Pioneer player doesn't pick them up. Yet I can manually enable them via the remote on the Pioneer player. When I look at the commercial copy of the DVD it seems to use the same settings and the Pioneer player does pick up the default subtitles.

I'm wondering if there is some other setting that the Pioneer player also looks at to determine if to enable a default subtitle stream or not.

It's very frustrating - but thank goodness for RW DVDs otherwise I'd have a mountain of useless DVDs by now.

The only thing that looks strange (although not really abnormal) is the subpic stream status in the PGC. The first stream uses the VOB streams 0 and 1. That's OK. But the subsequent streams use 10/11, 12/13 and 14/15. The gap in the numbering of the VOB stream IDs is usually caused by the fact that some streams have been stripped off, for example with DVDShrink. Maybe your Pioneer doesn't like that.

You could try to demux and remux all streams in the PGC. This should reorder the IDs. Demux with PgcDemux, and remux with Muxman. Don't forget to export and import the chapter points. Then, import the new VOBs with PgcEdit's Replace VTST function. You have to select the original Title before calling that function. When PgcEdit asks if you want to keep some data from the original PGC, answer yes. Burn a test DVD again and cross your fingers.

Interestingly I just did a full DVDShrink backup (ie. didn't remove any substreams, audio, etc) and the DVD I made from this doesn't show the 'forced' substream on the Pioneer.

Yet, when I run the DVD Image through PCGedit Trace it shows the correct substream being set, and the PC DVD player sets the substream correctly.

I've also just tried the same burnt disc on a standalone Magnavox player and it works correctly - so it's obviously something with the Pioneer.

I just can't figure out why the commercial DVD works OK, but the full DVDshrink copy doesn't.

You might try to compress the DVD using another method. I suggest DVD Rebuilder. The free version should be sufficient. It takes longer, but the quality is better, and the muxing is redone from scratch.

BTW, I don't understand why Pioneer is still considered as one of the best DVD-hardware brand. I have had many problems with a player drive and a burner, and I've read often complains on the standalone players and recorders. Usually, the cheap players are more tolerant with the DVD-Video standard!

Thanks r0lZ for the pointer to DVD Rebuilder. I'll give that a go and see how we go.

As for the Pioneer player - this one's about 6 years old but still kicking (apart from this issue). 6 years ago it cost me $400 so I'll milk it until it drops dead. But the Magnavox that the kids use I picked up for $50 last year at K-Mart - and it doesn't have this problem!

Isn't there any way to make possible to change the subtitle from the Option (Audio/Subtitle) menu :( ?
