MacroVision... when did it first appear?

Does anybody know when MacroVision started to appear on pre-recodeded VHS tape?

There is no infos on their site. One thing I remember is that that protection was not on my "2-head" VCR, but on the new "4-head" VCR. I think it was around 1995. :confused:

Wouldn't macrovision be a part of the media itself taking advantage of how VCR's are affected by varying signal levels? I guess that it is possible too that VCR's can be made to be effected by this or not. But what do I know, I never owned a VCR.

Yep, MacroVision is alive and well in VHS. For starters, every Disney release contains it :(

There are two forms of MacroVision on tape. I don't know when they switched over, but v1 was around as long ago as 1986. I had one tape deck that was sensitive to MacroVision, and one that wasn't.

I've had access to the VCR my parents had, but I never felt the need to buy one. I saved up a lot of money my sohpomore year of high school and bought a DVD player when they first came out. Never looked back since, except for that oritron I bought for college, and the overpriced Marantz I bought because the oritron was so bad.

Me young? When Macrovision came out I was the senior systems analyst for "a large nuclear power plant manufacturer" (Combustion Engineering of Connecticut). I retired (early) 4 years later.

AFAIK it only became mandatory to have macrovision-vulnerable AGC cirtuits in 1998 on the enaction of the DMCA.
