View Full Version : AVI2DVD: Oversized output when using D2SRoBa with AC3 audio

Hi people,
I always get an oversized (ca. 200 MB) VIDEO_TS folder when using AVI2DVD with D2SRoBa and AC3 audio. I just mark the checkbox under the Audiotab "Do not convert audio" when it's an AC3 avi and this problem occurs. If the source is a MP3 avi (converted to 224 kbit mp2 audio) this never happens.
A workaround for the problem is rather simple: I just have to tell D2SRoBa to make smaller images, so I set the DVD size to 4000 MB. Then I get as a result images with ca. 4,2 GB. But nevertheless I consider this as a bug either in D2SRoBa or in DVD2SVCD. Here is the log of an "oversized" conversion (of course using latest versions of DVD2SVCD and D2SRoBa):

I am fairly sure that it is not a bug in D2SRoBa, as it does not calculate the target video bitrate itself, but uses DVD2SVCD's.

I have that exact same problem.

Could someone post the DVD2SVCD logfile with the D2SROBA logfile here in case of oversized image here? Gspot given details would be also welcame.
For bug detection purposes.
Thanks in advance.

This has been reported before. I think D2S here wrongly uses the audio bitrate1 that appears when you uncheck "Do not convert audio" in its BR calculations. The difference between 446 and 192 is 254 MB, which may explain it.
You may set 384 (max) in that dropdown, check "Do not convert audio" again, run again, and report back if you get a more correct size.
Cheers.

Nope, tried setting setting audio bitrate1 to 384 and then rechecking "Do not convert audio", but final image is still around 300 mb oversized.

In my opinion it is certainly no RoBa but a DVD2SVCD problem!
Seems to be similar to my 'oversized bitrate with certain audio tracks' problem (see http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=89895 ).
My workaround is calculating the videobitrate with an Excel sheet and entering it into the DVD2SVCD Bitrate tab as I was taught by Nick(see http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=90246 )
Thanks to Nick!:)
I hope dvd2svcd himself will have a look into that (your/mine)matter when he will have some spare time.

Hi Cela,
Can you please help me how to calculate the videobitrate with excel sheet as im new on this stuff.

I have had this problem for some time now converting AVI's with AC3 audio to DVDR.
To me, DVD2SVCD simply does not subtract the AC3 file size from the final selected CD size. So all I do is set the final CD size to be what I'm after but minus the size of the AC3 audio, then the final encoded size comes out spot on. A quick and simple demux of the AC3 out of the AVI with VirtualDUB or one of its clones will very quickly give you the file size.

My Excel sheets looks like this example:
DVD Bitrate Calculation Sheet
Input:
filmlength= 182110 frames ; from IfoEdit
audio1_bitrate= 448 kbps ; from WinDVD Info Window
audio2_bitrate= 160 kbps ; from WinDVD Info Window
fps= 25 fps ; frames per second (PAL)
DVDsize= 4451 MB ; my value just below 4464 MB (DVD-R)
Processing:
audio_bitrate= 608 kbps ; sum of audio1 + audio2 bitrate
runtime= 7284,4 sec ; filmlength/frames_per_second
1kbps_size= 0,889208984 MB ; 1 {kbps} * runtime {sec} / 8 {bits per byte} / 1024 {kilo}
Output:
total_bitrate= 5005,6 kbps ; DVDsize {MB} * 8 {bits per byte} * 1024 {kilo} / runtime {sec}
video_bitrate= 4397,6 kbps ; total_bitrate - audio_bitrate
audio1_size= 398,4 MB ; audio1_bitrate * 1kbps_size
audio2_size= 142,3 MB ; audio2_bitrate * 1kbps_size
video_size= 3910,4 MB ; Video_bitrate * 1kbps_size
Total DVD size= 4451,0 MB ; Control sum of audio1+audio2+video size

In the bitrate tab, check the "Min. Av." box, then set both min. av and max av. bitrate to your chosen figure 4397 in my example.
Another cool method to calculate the video bitrate in advance is to use DVD2DVD-R 1.8.3. Here you get the value before you start the processing just after you open the VIDEO_TS and select the IFO.
ChickenMan's method looks much cooler. But how do you know in advance whether DVD2SVCD will produce the 'ac3-neglection'-error or not (for your particular DVD files)? There are reports, that it does, and there are reports that it does not. So you get the kick of gambling as bonus. ;)
I hope dvd2svcd will save us the workarounds and eventually correct the bug. PLEASE! And lets us know when it's done.

In my experienc both Divx and Xvid AVI that contain AC3 (be it 2ch or 5.1ch) when converted to DVD will ALWAYS NOT take into account the size of the AC3 file when "Do not convert audio" is ticked in D2S, resulting in output oversized by the size of the AC3 stream(s).
Re-encoding a DVD (containing AC3) down to DVDR size will ALWAYS result in the correct final encode size.
