If you have stillmenus it's only picture editing with Photoshop etc. Motionmenus are more difficult. If you have clean backgroung you can try to overlay the parts with the new button, if not :scared::confused:.
The subs has to be changed aswell using Photoshop etc.

no you don't have too. You can demux->edit->remux->ifoupdate
without reauthor.
You only need Paint vobedit ifoedit and a program that turns bmp2m2v like tmpgenc.
It's like
take the menu vob, demux with vobedit, find menu and save screenshot, edit screenshot, bmp->m2v, remux m2v with vobedit and join the menu vobs with vobedit. Ifoedit to update struckture and ready.
It's a bit hard to explain without picturs, i could post a guide if you like.

I had the same problem with my 4 dvd collection of Alien from China, which didn't have dutch subs.
From the doom9 guides I learned how to remux dutch subs and recreate the dvd, but the only thing that wasn't right was the sub menu.
http://img9.exs.cx/img9/481/orgineel_menu.gif
I only wanted english 5.1 surround and dutch subtitles, so it had to become this:
http://img86.exs.cx/img86/5002/New_menu.gif
Programs used:
Vobedit (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Vobtools/Vobedit06.zip)
Ifoedit (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Vobtools/Ifoedit0971.zip)
DGmpgdec (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Decoders/dgmpgdec1012a.zip) (old dvd2avi)
Tmpenc (http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_download.html) (30 days free) or the free DVDAutorGUI (http://www.videohelp.com/~liquid217/dvdauthorgui.pl)
Steps I followed:
1 RIP dvd to Hard disk in file mode
2 Strip the menu in Cell ID¡¦s
3 Rip the menu to BMP
4 Convert BMP to m2v with Tmpgenc or DVDAutorGUI
5 Remux new menu to old cell
6 Remux menu cells back together
7 Put back in original structure
8 Correct Ifo's
1 RIP dvd to Hard disk in file mode
http://www.doom9.org/dvddec-fullrip.htm
Rip the dvd to HD in file mode, you get something like this
C: DVD\VIDEO_TS
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB 110'464'232
VTS_01_1.VOB 1'073'643'520
VTS_01_2.VOB 1'073'631'232
etc..
2 Strip the menu in Cell ID's
In this dvd VTS_01_0.VOB is the vob that contains the menu. Create a new folder and call is "Menu".
Copy VTS_01_0.VOB in sub folder "Menu"
In this sub folder "Menu" create another subfolder called "Vobs".
(1) Open the VTS_01_0.VOB in subfolder "Menu" with Vobedit then select (2) demux and (3) Cellid.
http://img49.exs.cx/img49/5396/Vobedit_1.gif
Then "OK" and as destination choose the (double click) "Vobs" folder.
Close Vobedit when ready. In the subfolder "Vobs" are now the striped menu vob's by cell ID.
http://img40.exs.cx/img40/4025/Vobjes.gif
One of these vobs contains my static subtitlemenu.
3 Rip the menu to BMP
You can use DGindex (the old version of "dvd2avi" will also work) to open these vobs one by one to fined your menu. In this case it's in VTS_01_013.VOB only 157 kb (when there is no audio these menu's are very small)
In DGindex select File -> save BMP
Or when using dvd2avi select -> Video -> Color Space -> RGB
and Video -> YUV->RGB->PC Scale
then Options -> save BMP (dvd2avi puts the bmp in its own directory)
Save this BMP in the "Menu" folder as Menu_org.bmp
Now you can edit the menu with paint or what ever picture editor you like.
http://img86.exs.cx/img86/5002/New_menu.gif
And save it as New_menu.BMP
4 Convert BMP to m2v with Tmpgenc
(1) Open the New_menu.bmp with Tmpgenc
http://img40.exs.cx/img40/18/Tmpgen.gif
(2) Then select "load" and sub dir template, then choose the dvd_pal_.mcf/dvd_ntsc_.mcf template (depending if you have a pal or ntsc dvd)
(3) To choose "Video only" you have to unlock this template by selecting load again and loading the "unlock.mcf".
(4) Then select "Video only" now Tmpgenc will create a m2v file. To improve the m2v quality hit "Configure" and at ->Rate control mode: click "settings" and move the slider to 100%. Hit Ok 2 times
(5) Select as output dir "Menu" (I know picture isn't completely right)
(6) Encode
(I wise there was a free easy tool that could do bmp2m2v )
EDIT: There is thanks M7s, DVDAutorGUI now it can convert a jpg or
bmp to a still m2v. Just select menus->create m2v still
5 Remux new menu to old cell
Open the original cell, in my case VTS_01_013.VOB with vobedit
http://img41.exs.cx/img41/9031/Vobedit_2.gif
Select edit -> Remux m2v
Go to the "Menu" folder and select New_menu.m2v
(1) then at "Save As" select a folder higher, the "Menu" folder as output (bug with overwriting)
(2) Than Save
http://img35.exs.cx/img35/7830/Vobedit_3.gif
Close Vobedit (Bug with reopen)
6 Remux menu cells back together
Remove/Delete the VTS_01_013.VOB from the "Vobs" Folder and move the New VTS_01_013.VOB from the "Menu" folder to the "Vobs" folder.
Start up Vobedit again and select the First menu vob VTS_01_000.VOB
Then select Edit -> Join CellVob files
http://img29.exs.cx/img29/3527/Vobedit_4.gif
Save as VTS_01_1.VOB and save, the new menu's vob will be save now in the "Vobs" folder.
7 Put back in original structure
Remove the original VTS_01_0.VOB from the VIDEO_TS folder (original menu)
Rename the new menu Vts_01_1.VOB from the "Vobs" folder to VTS_01_0.VOB and move it to the VIDEO_TS folder.
8 Correct Ifo's
The next part was already very well written by dimad (maker of menuedit) here http://menuedit.dimad.net/ht_me_update_ifo.html
1 Startup Ifoedit and open VTS_01_0.IFO (the ifo connected to the menu (01))
2 Click "Menu Extras"
http://img74.exs.cx/img74/7135/ifoedit1.gif
Make sure you have these items selected
http://img41.exs.cx/img41/7503/ifoedit2.gif
At (4) select the destination of the new ifo/bup files (for example one folder above the VIDEO_TS folder.
(6)OK
(7) Make sure u select Check All
http://img25.exs.cx/img25/3418/ifoedit3.gif
(8) Check Correct Ifo tables
(9) Strip it
Copy the new files into your VIDEO_TS folder overwrite the old ones
Almost ready, open ifoedit and open the new VTS_01_0.ifo in the VIDEO_TS folder.
Select "Get VTS Sectors" and click Yes and OK until ifoedit is ready, then quit.
Now it should work, if you like to remove the unused submenu buttons you can use the free version of menuedit.
note: the overlaybitmap will not be chanced so I'am hoping you don't have text there.

Yes, damn good Alex.
There is a free way of converting BMP to M2V.
1. Use BlankVOB to make a 1 cell blank (VOB/Cell ID 1/1)
2. Use IfoEdit to Create IFOs based on this VOB
3. Open the newly created "DVD" in DVD Shrink and insert the still image of the (modified) BMP instead of the blank title 1
4. Process the project in DVD Shrink
5. Demux the resultant VOB with VobEdit
Thanks to 2COOL for this methodology

Another free and maybe easier way to convert bmp to mv2 is to convert to jpeg first (if you know how to edit your bmp file you know how to save as jpeg, as long as you don't use MS Paint :p). Then use DVDAuthorGUI (http://www.videohelp.com/~liquid217/dvdauthorgui.pl) to convert jpeg to mv2 (by choosing menues/create mv2 still or simply clicking ctrl+s).

Fist of all thank you Msc_Alex for this guide.
I was looking for it since ages.
There is only one problem that I have experienced, and I am not sure if anyone else had it before.
I just do exactly what Msc_Alex explained. But When I watch the DVD on 4:3 television (or I set my player to 4:3) the buttons are not appear at the right place. And if I watch it on a 16:9 TV set (as I have both 16:9 and 4:3 TV) all the buttons are at the right place.
What could cause the problem?
I hope somebody knows the answare.
Thanks!

not sure but check this:
ah first you have to check if your menu is 4:3 or 16:9.
When encoding from bmp 2 m2v check the corect flag 4:3 or 16:9
you could use restream on the m2v to chance the flag.
try it :)

I managed to remove a button and change the menu using the methods above, and menuedit.
But Now I want to add a button to a menu. Menuedit worked, but how do I get the button to highlight when it is selected?
Msc_Alex
11th January 2005, 14:39
You can't (not easy) add a highlight because it's the sub that is mixed in the vob. I normaly re-use a button, remove the text (in the bmp) and put my own text there. Then with menuedit or vodedit you can chance the command.

With the trail version of menuedit you can find the menu (you will only see blocks) and select the subtitle button you made. Then select edit (here you can see the command) Check the commands of the other buttons and then adjust the command so that your sub stream is selected.

how do you make very good quality m2v files from bmp.
When i make it with tmpgenc and DvdAuthorGui there are a little bit messy, there are not that good quality like bmp was.

how about using muxman & pgcedit?
regards

Msc_Alex
30th March 2005, 14:30
Yes but there is a problem if you have a 16:9 menu, currently muxman
will mix it to 4:3. But from the tests I did with Tmpg, dvdauthorgui, mklogo and Muxman, Muxman was the winner ! :) You must try to avoid Hard lines in your menu, I make them a little fuzzy and they look better.
(ps Vobedit would work just as easy for the demuxing)
pps you could use restream to chance the flag to 16:9

With the right tools you can do almost anything, but the time and effort involved might be substantial. For example on my first dvd backup I did button repositioning that involved changing background, moving higlight and select images, rebuilding menus and reauthor everything with dvdauthor. I did it for learning purposes only and wouldn't do it again.
Basically you'll need to rip subpictures (button shapes) from your menu vob. You can do this with Subrip and save them to disk as bitmaps. Then you can load bitmaps in your prefered graphics editor and do with them whatever you like. Once you have your new bitmaps comes the tricky part. You need to rebuild everything back. That includes background m2v, probably audio and subpictures with button coordinates, shapes and commands. dvdauthor approach is very time consuming.
sesko
10th May 2005, 14:43
yes i know but where i find shapes? i remux menu with vobedit by cell id but i cannot find shapes(this are higlighted pistures that you told, when you go on the vutton and the button change colour-text) anywhere

hm i hoped that will be something like edit button, that you just change picture and muxed it back to menu like in buttons only
i don't think so. most probably you need to edit the button highlights (subpicture stream) and obviously mux it back...

how do i save subpicture back to menu, when i edit it
i need only that now and i will finish:)
violao
10th May 2005, 22:06
Sorry, but I don't know any simple way, like remux m2v with Vobedit. The problem is your bitmaps are not yet subpicture once you edit them. You need some authoring SW to reconstruct the menu. I used dvdauthor but that's too complicated to explain in forum. Try man pages and examples. Basically you supply your bitmaps and multiplexed mpeg video (m2v+audio) to spumux command utility along with xml description file where you define button coordinates and author with dvdauthor command using another xml file where you can define button commands. Perhaps you could only use spumux and then use another menu editor to define commands.
Mux with dvdmaestro a new menu vob (subp. + background + sound), make a least one button or menuedit/dvdrm gives problems.
Use menuedit or dvdremake's replace option to replace the new vob with the old one.

11th May 2005, 00:44
Very nice guide Msc_Alex.
But I think a easier way to put the final vob back together, instead of step 6, 7 and 8, is to use vobBlanker! You just need to find the menu and cell of the target menu, and than use the replace button to select the new vob you created in step 5.

its good that are dutc to english translators on the internet.
i translate quide and i manage to highlight button.
tnx for all help and guide
i did everything like is said in guide, but then when i go to the button it dont highligt it ok
I think that is because subpicture streams on dvd are red, but dvd maestro makes new subpicture stream blue color. I see thath when i go ripping it with subrip.
Anybody got any solutions??
have you tried to change the colors (e.g. with pgcedit)?

does it have a highlight rectangle (about the size of the button)
or just the text?

Hi..
Nice guide :D I have used the guide a while, but when the dvd has more than 2 pgc's it never works. And then I have to make the dvd without menu. At the moment I'm sitting with a dvd with 123 pgc's, and I know by experience that it will never work :(
Is there a way to remove the "empty pgc's". Because most of them are only 1-3 seconds long.
