Can anyone recommend a good USB to USB file transer cable?

I'm looking to transfer some file from my desktop to laptop machines. Ethernet and burning to a cd are unfortunately not options. I've tried a couple of the USB file transfer cables but while they are good for transfer of smaller files, they always seem to crash halfway through a large file.

Anyone used one of these that works on large files or during long sustained transfers? I'm running XP home on both machines and have USB 1.1. Thanks.

how big are the files?
usb xfrs should not crash out .. they should run thru.. maybe your ports are a bit dodgy. Try an USB/ethernet adapter ?? Upgrade to usb2.0 its 40x faster!!

Are you getting something like "delayed write fail" error?
If so, then that is a recurring error with ViA chipsets and USB (although it should happen with USB 2.0 only)
I got a external usb hd case yesterday and have been fighting against it as well
I get the aforementioned error on my ASUS board (ViA chipset), on the other pc (Asrock board, SiS chipset) it works flawlessly - I'm able to transfer gigs of data with no problems at all
Apparently such error occurs with Intel and nForce based boards as well though I can't confirm it
I've been digging through ViA's forums and it seems there is not known fix guaranteed to work
Recommended workarounds are either downgrade to usb 1.1 or buy an usb controller card of another brand...

Hi,

The error is simply a file found not error and the USB transfer is forced to abort. I also have an ASUS board (A7V133) and got a bunch of delayed write errors when I installed a new 200 GB drive. All problems were easily solved by going to the ASUS website and downloading the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers.

On a side note, has anyone transferred using a firewire cable connected to firewire ports on both machines?

As far as I know, ViA released a bugfix for delayed write fail for ata and sata ide devices in the latest 4in1 drivers
But the problem still remains for usb 2.0

As a connection method I much prefer FireWire over USB2, especially as there's no requirement for special "cross-over" type cables.

Plus... it's never, ever, crashed on me!

Assuming you had the firewire setup on a Windows PC, were you required to set up IP addresses or perform any configurations in Windows to get it to work? Or was it really just simply plugging in the cable?

All you need do is enable "File Sharing" of the folder(s) or drive(s) you want to transfer data from and plug in the cable...

To be honest I can't remember whether you have to bother creating an "Work Group" and other networking associated instructions.

I've also got one of those "USB(1.1/2.0) to Ethernet" adaptors Wolfman was talking about... Although I've not used it yet to tranfer files, WinXP found it no problem.
