Probably a setting issue

I don't know how I have things setup here any differently than on my home machine, but I'm using XviD 29082004 1.0.2 and Gordian Knot 0.28.8, and for some reason, I'm getting dropped frames / jagged motion on my encodes. At first I thought it was me using IVTC unnecesarilly, but I did a few encodes last night that were all progressive, and it dropped frames in those too.

I have a feeling it has something to do with BFrames, and I saw the thread about a bug in VDub (mod 1.5.10.1, 2934 is installed here) that perhaps has been fixed now...?

Right now my settings are just like in the Doom9 Guide, that's how I've always done it, and I thought that's how I had it set up on my encoding mule at home. I'm not a hardcore setting experimenter, I just like my backups to look good.

I do use a standalone player occasionally.

More information would be helpful:

1. What DirectShow filter is used to render the movie? XviD? ffdshow? DivX?

2. What is your computer specs?

3. Provide more information on what you encoded, e.g. type of movie, resolution, bitrate, 2-pass or 1-pass, bitrate, etc.

22 minute episode encode, from dvd, 4:3, 576x416, interlaced NTSC... XviD 2 pass, let GKnot determine br ~1600k .. 245mb of video

138 minute movie, from dvd, 16:9, 608x320, progressive NTSC... XviD 2 Pass, let GKnot determine br ~825k .. 588mb of video

130 minute movie, from dvd, 16:9, 704x400, interlaced NTSC... XviD 2 Pass, let Gknot determine br ~1800k .. 1218mb of video

I haven't tried it with packed bitstream off, I'm going to do that now. I can't remember if I had that on or off at home. Is there any way to check a file for it that has already been encoded?

I have been using DVD2AVI 1.77.3 straight up... didn't realize there were problems there, i can change that up too.

Also try to disable xvid processing in ffdshow and let the xvid decoder do it, see if that makes a difference.

I will try with the DGMPGdec mod next, as that is one thing that's been consistently different between here and at home I guess.

LordAccord: Yes it is important to replace mpeg2dec3.dll and DVD2AVI with the latest from DG: DGindex & DGdecode. You can get the latest from here:

rename your current DVD2AVI folder to something else and extract the zip to a new DVD2AVI folder. Rename DGdecode.dll to mpeg2dec3dg.dll and DGindex.exe to DVD2AVIdg.exe. Make a copy of mpeg2dec3dg.dll, change it to mpeg2dec3.dll and put it in your Gknot folder to replace the old one thats there. Make sure Gordian knot paths are pointing to these files and you should be fine. You should also check what version of Besweet you have. I believe when Gknot 0.28.8 first came out it contained a dodgy version of Besweet which was then replaced a bit later. Check the GKnot threads here on doom9, there's a sticky for 0.28.8.

One other note, there is a 0.32 beta for Gknot that is out now as well which is updated with new functionality, etc so you could try that as well.

hmm, interesting... taking another look at the ffdshow filter, disabling does normalize the 2 movie encodes; it fixes the problem except for a few dropped frames in the interlaced one, I can live with that like I always do.

But it doesn't fix the problem on the TV episodes...
