View Full Version : Audio lag and AV stutter (0.63a) - Need Help!!!

Hi,
I'm trying to rip some new DVDs that I've got.
My CCE SP version is 2.67
The last time I used DVD-RB was when 0.56 was the latest version, and all my rips were fantastic.
However, with the latest DVD that I've tried (Full Metal Panic volume 1, PAL, Madman) the audio in episode 2 starts late. To prevent it from going out of synch however the video stops and the audio catches up (tried on various software dvd players on various machines). The original suffers no such problems however.
So I try loading just the vob, and there is no audio whatsoever. It recognises 3 audio tracks (shows them to be selected, but even though they aren't greyed out they are unselectable) however doesn't play any.
I tried a different episode and it was fine.
So I tried again with some diff settings (disabled AudioDub(blankclip()) ) and more passes but it was the same.
So I tried DVD-RB 0.63a and the problem remained, however now there was an occasional stutter, as if the computer load was too high. (I know this is a known problem but thought it was gone in this build.)
I'll just revert back to the prev version I was using as things were fine for my purposes (and the stutter wasn't there).

Anyone know of a remedy for the lag?
Any software I could use to perhaps remux the vob and see if that works? (I need to keep the 3 audio tracks tho and also the 2 sub tracks) Or maybe if it's an authoring fault in the original, anyone know if I could reauthor it easily somehow then run it through DVD-RB ?

Thanks a lot
Morien

Edit: I'll try with volume two and see if the issue is in that too.

I tried with volume two, and the second episode has the same problem.
But even though I've reverted back to such an old version, the stutter is still there! Never there before I updated though.

A quick search yielded someone else having a similar problem with lag months ago but no one replied to his thread :(

Edit:
I've had various ideas that I'll try and update on. But if anyone has any info for me then that would be greatly appreciated.

Right now I've uninstalled EVERYTHING dvd-rb related and reinstalled all the latest versions (except those that should have older versions).
I'll try again (another 10 hours down the drain), and see if the problem persists.
I'll try the special error processing function one time, see if that fixes it. I also thought maybe since the m2v and the pre-touched ac3 have no probs individually, maybe i could try muxing them with another prog (If anyone knows of one where I can mux the vid with 3 ac3s and 2 subs then I'd appreciate the heads up) or running them through another shrink prog after using dvd-rb.

Wish me luck!

I tried again, but did things differently in the rebuild stage.
First attempt I did everything usual and got the stutter and lag.
Second time I had the 'Special Error Processing' option enabled, the lag went (YAY!) but the stutter remained. Each time it has been in the same spot as well.
I'll try another rebuild but take away one of the audio tracks to see if it's gone over the DVD bit limit, as the m2v seems fine.
I'll also try running it through DVD Shrink at No Compression for everything exept the ep(s) with stutter, ill run them through at 100%. (Update: Did nothing, problem persists)

Just to make this clear, as this thread may put a negative connotation on the software.
I think this software is great and, when I first used it, was amazed. Prior to this I was using DVD Shrink which I was pleased with until I got hold of an anime series called Scryed that I wanted to backup.
So, I tried it in DVD Shrink but the result came out to a very dirty image (about 60% compression) and it no longer looked like a new anime, but rather a very old one with a source that had been drug through mud. The quality was unacceptable and so I looked into the slower but higher quality methods. Then I stumbled upon DVD-RB and did my first backup and was amazed. I couldn't even tell that I had shrunk it. (This is for CCE, I've never used the others).
So just to make myself clear on this point, although I have described some pretty irritating stuff in this thread, I am still very pleased (and very grateful) for this fine piece of software. I know that it's CCE that gives it the quality and not DVD-RB, however I would never have gotten past the first paragraph in the guide for the other CCE methods.
And so, jdobbs (and if there's other developers), thankyou for your great software :) If it stays how it is now, but becomes bug free I couldn't be happier (although that isn't to say that I wouldn't accept more functionality  )

I downloaded DVD-lab and ran one of the vob's through the bitrate viewer.
This is what is came out like:
http://img23.exs.cx/img23/1273/bitrate.jpg

I thought perhaps it was the bitrate as it was around the first jump reaching over 9000 (first line below the red max line) that it stutters. And also just after the second jump (over 9000).
However that doesn't hold true with the rest as where it peaks doesn't stutter at all.

What could be wrong? Help!!!

Ok, to make things easier for people to help me (I really need help here) as I've written quite a bit, this is what I've tried so far:

DVD-RB 0.56, CCE SP 2.67 - Audio of ep 2 lagged (didn't start for 3 seconds then the video froze for audio to catch up) *
- AudioDub(blankclip()) enabled
- AudioDub(blankclip()) disabled

DVD-RB 0.63a, CCE SP 2.67 - Audio of ep 2 lagged (didn't start for 3 seconds then the video froze for audio to catch up, video stuttered)

Reverted back to DVD-RB 0.56. Stutter remained !! Lag still present.

Uninstalled everything, reinstalled everything (0.63a). Stutter and Lag remained

Enabled 'Special Error Processing' - Lag was fixed! Stutter remained

Tried rebuilding with 0.59 as recommended in another thread (files still encoded with 0.63a) - Lag returned, Stutter remained.

Rebuilt with 0.63a and SEP enabled. Tried running through DVD Shrink - stutter remained.

I really have no idea what is going on. If anyone thinks it might perhaps be the original is authored poorly I'll try to get my hands on the NTSC version (diff authoring studio) and see if that has it, but I'd really prefer to get my ones working. I've run many other DVDs from the same authoring studio (Madman Australia) through DVD-RB and never had a problem though.

Thanks
Morien

* I didn't view it extensivley and so stutter might have been there from the first encode. However I was using the same versions as my last encodes and they had NO issues AT ALL.

----------------------------

There's only so much that I can do to try and fix the problem or atleast find out what's wrong, and so I'm going to try one more thing than give up. (Technically 2 things but done simultaneously).
On my PC - I'll redo it, as I have been, but with one audio track taken out to hopefully reduce total bitrate (maybe it's an issue, but I doubt it).
On my Laptop - Laptop has never had any DVD-RB related stuff exept DVD Decryptor, so to narrow down the possibility of it being my computer I'll try on the laptop with 0.56 which I KNOW does what I want. If it doesn't work I've narrowed it down to being either the source DVD or the software (which doesnt really narrow it down at all).
I'll then get my hands on a different source (NTSC version) and try that. It seems this problem either isn't common or people are clueless as to how to fix it (any and all remedies I've come across in other threads havent worked). So if nothing else, atleast this thread will serve to let someone else with the same problem know that it's not just them (and maybe give them some ideas).

I don't have much help to offer, i'll just pitch the idea that you try version 0.60b. It did good things for people in the Star Wars thread. wmansir linked to it here http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=82835&perpage=20&pagenumber=4

good luck!

Ok, thanks a lot. For where I'm at, any help is good help.
Looks like I'll do another test with that then. :)

Just an update tho. Last night I left the encodes going on my PC and Laptop as per in my last post.
Results on PC (0.63a with one of the audio tracks taken out)
Stutter in the EXACT same place, lag there too.

Results on virgin Laptop (0.56 with everything in tact)
Stutter is gone. Lag has returned.
Tried a rebuild with 0.63a and 0.60b and kept getting an error #0004. :(

My thoughts now are that my PC needs a good format and that the source may be crap :(
I'll try with the NTSC DVD and see what happens.

Could there be any reason to the stutter being in the exact same part of each episode tho? (Same thing on screen as it's during the intro)
