OK, I have been using DVDShrink for backups and archiving original digital media.

I have noticed my DVDs play fine on my stand alone DVD player but when I play them on my computer (WinXP using WinDVD4) about 40-50 minutes into the DVD they freeze up.

I'm pretty sure this is just the quality of the DVDs used (Memorex 4x DVD+R 4.7G).

What is a good quality DVD I can use that will play on my computer DVD player without stopping?

And can I upgrade my DVD player to one that will play my current DVDs without issue like my stand alone DVD player?

You probably need to take a look at the DVD Media database at www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdmedia. According to that database, Memorex 4X DVD+R are or were produced by four different manufacturers.

I did not go through the comments, but there are currently 248 comments about these Memorex branded media in the database outlining experiences with the products.

You may also wish to try a different software DVD player, such as Media Player Classic, available from Doom9's download page, or check with InterVideo for patches or updates for your version of WinDVD, or upgrade to the current release ... 6.

Everyone has their own favorite media, so lots of people will tell you lots of different things - that site that jggimi is a good collection of people's opinions. For me, I use RiData media at 4x - they're cheap ($0.40 or so per disc), they always work for me, and discs I burned on RiData media two years ago or even older still work great. I'm sure someone else will have some horror story about how Ridata never worked for them and they burned 100 coasters from a 100 disc spindle ;)

P.S. You might also try starting your media player with "high" priority instead of normal, so it's certain that your media player is getting all the CPU time it needs.

I think it is the DVD itself and not my player.

This is because when I try and copy the TS Video folder to my drive from the DVD it gets part way through and then errors out and can't copy the complete folder.

Would a better DVD player rememdy that and read the DVD better or do I need better media?

I just need to know which to fix first.
