i read somewhere there was a way to put ogg and other audio with mpeg4 video in an mp4 container with nero. i have experimented a little and i know 3ivx mux filter will only accept mpeg4 video, aac audio, or mp3 audio as inputs. which i guess is the only spec compliant streams anyways. i would be curious to put ac3, ogg, wma or whatever in this container just to experiment. how could this be done.

you cant...
i believe ogg was/is possible with nero... but thats about it if i'm right. WMA will probably be out of the question anyway.

Hi Simon,
Have you read Bonds MP4 FAQ (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62723)?
As you know the MP4 container, is normally associated with containing streams such as: Mpeg4 SP and ASP, Mpeg4 AVC (SP and ASP), AAC LC and HE and MP3.
However, the MP4 container does allow the inclusion of "private streams".
What we all need is for somebody to create an "advanced MP4 muxing tool".... do you know anybody?
Cheers

if you would have read my faq you would have found a link to a tool, which can place vorbis in .mp4
still someone has to compile it

I'll have a go at compiling later.
Playback is only supposed to work in the included patched player.

I wonder if the patch in the player can be used to patch direct-show based players?

well the batch has the purpose to make mpeg4ips player able to play the stream, it doesnt mean that it is "the only player" that can do so

thanks for the input. i have not read the faq in its entirety, but i have hit the main points and know about private streams and all that.
it seems like even if i could mux it after compiling this tool, the standard 3ivx filters will not demux it, so there seems to be little point as i dont like the idea of using specific players or patching stuff. i agree with SeeMoreDigital:

preferably a directshow mux/demux filter pack just like 3ivx but more versatile. maybe as versatile as AVI-Mux_GUI is for avi's. (outstanding prog btw)
stephanV: any idea how to use nero as a muxer?

no (i refuse to install Nero :p)
and i was wrong too, it was MP4creator that supported it...
anyway, dont ask me too much about this private MP4 stuff. I'm not particulary in favour of it (not because i dislike MP4, but because i don't think its a particular good idea putting non-MPEG4 content in THE MP4 container), and it can already be done much better by Matroska now, which aims for this sort of stuff (in contrary to MPEG4/MP4 developers).

Just so everybody knows. This is what "our man Bond" wrote about "private streams" in his MP4 FAQ...
Is it also possible to place streams not covered by the MPEG-4 standard in MP4?
Yes, altough i dont like the idea of doing so, the MPEG-4 standard defines how to place any stream in MP4. Similar to how streams are marked in AVI with private FourCCs, in MP4 they get a "private track ID". Note that no player will be able to handle such streams in MP4, but will simply ignore them, if not explicitely specified to do so
the following streams, not covered by MPEG-4, can be placed in MP4 already:
- Ogg Vorbis, via a patched mp4creator. playback only works with the patched WMP4Player too
- Apple's Lossless Audio (ALAC/ALE - not compliant with MPEG-4 ALS) is placed in MP4 via iTunes
- DVD subtitle streams ("Vobsubs"), via Nero Recode2
- AMR Speech Audio, via the NEC e808 mobile phone for example
only the future will show if these private streams will be widely accepted and supported...

i would be glad to test it, when i could get my hand on a compile :)

EDIT: I guess there are some people here who have tried to de-mux "Apple/QuickTime" lossless audio streams out of the MP4 container... and failed?
Cheers
