maximum playable bitrate?

after having problems with a high bitrate sample i encoded i wondered:
at what bitrate (max, not avarage) i could get playback problems (non-smooth playback, can't output the 25fps)?

my system specs are:
athlon @ 1.464
512MB DDR
WinXP pro
some backround activity (emule, icq, mirc, FaH, ...)

you can try 100mbps :) Are you using the new curve compression?

i used ERMP and did a normal 2pass encoding
i played it with mpc, hfe was activated with sharpening set to 0

the test clips are 30sec to 2 minute clips from metropolis (2001 restoration)

you seem to think that the bitrate is not the cause of the problem?

It is critical that you use the latest HFE 2.1 (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=75278), where we fixed a performance problem relative to the previous version. It did not matter whether HFE and/or sharpening was on or off. The problem was still there, in the old version.

With this new DLL, and sharpening turned OFF, you should be able to play 640x480 on the equivalent of a P3 800 MHz (barely). Also try to disable HFE, and see if that makes a difference.

The bitrate does not matter as much as the resolution, as long as it is within reasonable bounds :eek:

is 2300avg and 3000max "within reasonable bounds"? (= ~2hour on 3 cds)

That's reasonably, albeit high for 640x480. I am guessing with the HFE2.1 update it will play back well.

(max bitrate is not relevant for the new rate control, with the old streaming rate control, 5X average is recommended)

when going for 3 CDs i keep the full pal resolution
also i'll try without any filtering against the grain

since a hd crash i have to do one thing after another, for space reasons, so everything takes a lil longer for me atm
