View Full Version : Xvid is "jumping" - please help me

Hello at all!

I have a problem with Xvid: When I play films in BS-Player, everything is moving faster appr. every 10 seconds. People in the film are running for half a second, then there are 10 to 20 normal seconds again.

When I use MediaPlayer, there is no "running", but it just "jumps" a bit so there is a jerk( I don`t know the English word) every 20 seconds.

I have tried the newest versions of both Koepis and Nics binaries with only one of them installed but it makes no difference.
When I have no of those codecs installed BS-Player uses the codec used by Nero.
There is no jumping then, but moving forward or backward in the film takes very long, while in Nic`s and Koepi`s I arrive immedeately when I click somewhere on the "timebar".

My system:
Win 2000
GF 4200
Athlon XP 2200+ (is not used very much during playing)

Perhaps it has to do something with my DVD-Problem:
When I play DVDs with PowerDVD, the sound is breaking down every few minutes and I have to reverse a bit to make it run again. The video continues without any mistake even if there is no sound.
I have tried my onboard sound (A7N8X) and an old Soundblaster 4.1, both on different Operating Systems, but there is always the same mistake with the Sound.

The funny thing is that my Xvid-movies with ac3-sound have a perfect sound Quality!

Do you have any solution?

I had the same problem when I was using an old version of xvid.
Did you check that you are actually using xvid? Try this, when the movie runs, right click, than go to options, filters and check all the codecs that you are using for that movie: there should be an "xvid mpeg 4 video decoder" codec running..

I have the very same problem, but I couldn't figure out any rule. It seems to happen with every codec. I installed XViD 1.01 and the new ffdshow. But also w/out ffdshow I have the same results. I upgraded my system, however, to an ASRock board (isn't yours one, too, halloabcde?) with an asynchronous memory to CPU speed (133 to 166 Mhz). Could that be the reason?

Try installing Reclock at
http://ogo.nerim.net/reclockfilter
and see if that fixes the jumping.

@tempe: I`ve got an ASUS-Board, which should be a bit better quality than an Asrock (it is also expensier). And I run my RAM syncronous (both, CPU and Ram, with 166Mhz, that means CPU is overclocked but with a lower multi). So that can`t be the reason.
@center: thanks for the hint, I will try this out!
I get the impression that not all of my movies jump, and the jumping is especially when some hungry programs are running although my CPU usage is only 10% then.

I will write my results when I have some!
Thanks!

what version of media player are you using?

I have a horrible time with WMP 10.0 causing jumping / desync issues on DivX and Xvid files ( more xvid )

however, if I load them up in mediaplayer classic, everything is happy...

If your using 10, try the same....

I am using BS-Player.
And now everything seems to be allright again although I havn`t even installed Reclock yet.

But thanks for your help!

ReClock solved my problem!

Thanks, Center!!

So, in fact it has something to do w/ my changed hardware, right? Or did M$ change their Direct Sound driver between XP and service pack 2? (I had ffdshow installed anyway).

halloabcde,

I'm experiencing the same problem (I think). I've just upgraded my motherboard+CPU+RAM and now, there're playback problems with my XviDs (and with DivX too).

I did some tests and they led me to the _sound output device_.
I changed the "DirectSound output" to "WaveOut" and it _seems_ to be good. But I'm *not* sure (I haven't time enough to watch an entire movie...)
Could you try this in MediaPlayerClassic and report the results? Thanks...

I have just tried out Reclock because the jumping is back again now, and here are the results:
Now, its not the picture that is jumping (that runs smoothly now) but there are occasional gaps in the sound of about half a second.

I have the impression that both, jumping and soundgaps, increase when I advance in the movie.

And the problem is sometimes there and sometimes not, while my CPU usage is always around 0% !

@jon.schaffer:

I don`t know where I should change the settings you are speaking of.
What MB and soundcard do you have? Also A7N8X and soundblaster?

Now, its not the picture that is jumping (that runs smoothly now) but there are occasional gaps in the sound of about half a second.

Ooooh, it seems to be exactly the same problem than mine...

1) Config Informations:
MB: Asus P4P800 SE
CPU: P4 3.00 GHz
Sound: SB PCI 128

Before, I had the same SoundBlaster card with a P3 700 MHz and no problem at all.

2) The settings I used (and I did not find time yet to test it extensively) that should work:
you have to set the sound renderer to WaveOut in the last element of the render chain. I.E: the last filter/codec that lead the sound must lead it to the WaveOut device. This last element can be:
- internal in MediaPlayerClassic
- AC3Filter
- ReClock

To change it: go to the properties page of the filter and search for "Use WaveOut as default renderer" of something like that.

If you use ReClock, it is the last element, so... in ReClock: "ReClock configuration" icon, then uncheck "Use DirectSound interface for...". Validate and then try the result... and let me know it.

Edit1: added the end of the post that I deleted for an unknown reason
Edit2: this method WORKS - I had time to see an full length movie, without jumping nor silent gaps! YEAH!!! Please confirm ;)

Thanks for the hint!
It seems to have worked (although there have always been days with and without problems...).
The only thing is that I ca sometimes hear the sound is not 100% correct. There is from time to time a part of a word missing. But anyway, it`s much better than before!

Does anybody knows more about this issue in DirectSound?
Is there another solution to the problem (ie: can we go on using the DirectSound device)? With a particular version of DirectX maybe?

Or is this problem too minor and related to some paricular configurations? (eg Asus motherboards? etc)

halloabcde:
are you sure that sometimes words disappear - isn't it like that in the original soundtrack? For me, there's no more any problem...
It sucks if this method isn't perfect :(

Its for sure that its related to sound card synchronization when you use Direct Sound table, Its problem with Windows 2000 pro SP4, Asus based board with 865 and 875 chipset and Intel drivers. Changing back to Wave out Table should sort problem and if you disable sound card and deinstall drivers you should see no skippings and jumpings. Materials based on Divx, Xvid or Div3 should suffer because of that incompatibility.
You said something like not every movie or video material would demonstrate synchronization problems like jumping or skipping. If you look closely in bsplayer in video info when you play that problematic video are with etc. 23,97fps, you should see that movies and video materials with lets say 30fps doesn't have any skipping or jumping in video.
Reclock-er is little difficulty to maintain, because if you want smooth playback without skipping you must change video Hz in your resolution according to divisibility with frame rate of video material.
Like 4x25fps=100hz an so...
