Opening gop is not closed !!!

this message I can see in using dvd2avi on mpg files... What's the problem ? After, the project is corrupted, VDub crashes, etc...

This situation is similar to keyframes in avi files. If the first frames of the avi are delta frames (ie: the leading keyframe is missing) then no frames will be decodable until the next keyframe is reached.

The same is true here. The first few frames are there, but since the previous gop is missing, they are not decodable. Once the first gop occurs in the video, subsequent frames should be decodable.

This message is just a warning, not an error message.

Is the file playable? Sounds like you have a bad video file.

the file is playable, but I want to make a divx with it, and according to me this error may disturb the encoding process, no ?

Well, the project shouldn't be corrupted, so something is wrong there. But the GOP warning, won't affect encoding. You see the leading frames CAN'T be decoded. No software can decode them. When you play the file, the player just ignores the leading frames until it reaches a GOP. It's likely that no player software generates a warning in this case either, since there is nothing that can be done about it anyway.

Can VdubMod open the file directly?

Yes, VDub can. But first a box appears "parsing interleaved MPEG-2 file", and then "some warning were issued during the previous operation : anachronistic or discontinuous timestamp found in video <POSTION>, this may indicate an improper join" ?????

Then the file is corrupted after all. Players probably gloss over the problem, but that's not something encoders should do, at least without explicitly saying so.

I would try to repair or rebuild the file. VCDGear can repair MPEG streams, and TMPGEnc has a good set of Mpeg Tools to demux and remux the file. There may be others.

I have some dvd files that display this error when opened in dgindex. The files play fine in windows media player and in vlc media player. Will this error cause a problem when burning the dvd or playing the dvd in a stand alone dvd player?

It depends on what you mean by "okay".

Even if the player waits for a GOP to start decoding that may not be enough, because the GOP might be open. But the worst that can happen is that the first few frames may show macroblocking. After the first few frames everything will be OK.
