PC - on/off switching

I have not used any of these so called "media PC's" with remote control yet but I presume you can switch them on and off via the remote control...

So I was wondering. Can any newish PC be modified to switch on and off via an remote control?

I guess USB eqipment will be needed.

it doesn't require USB.. there are many mainboards out there where you can program a key on a PS2 keyboard to start up the PC. I used to simply hit the space key and the PC would boot up. PC maker Siemens even has a power button on keyboards to start a PC and shut it down - just like MACs have.
There's also wake-on-lan and wake-on-modem and my latest mainboard seems to be able to use USB devices for startup as well.

Shutting down is really no big science.. run a program that catches a command via the remote and launches shutdown.exe. Booting up is a bit more complex and requires hardware support, but it's certainly doable and is has been done for various devices for years.

I've configured quite a few PC to shut down from the "sleep" key on an PS2 key board.

I have an USB keyboard with 2No USB ports fitted to my other PC. But I must admit I'm rather suprised that all of todays USB keyboards don't offer an "power button" as standard now.

PC's just don't seem to be very user friendly as MAC's in this regard.
