Does anyone know of a simple way to encode vob to wmv? Do you need to pay for the privilage of encoding to wmv? OR does anyone have any ideas on which format to post a short clip on a web site? The target audience is the senior set, and not very tech savvy. Thanks.

WMencoder is free, im not sure if it can convert vobs though...

you could also use Nic's WMencoder, which accepts AVIsynth scripts. (so you can use DGIndex).

WMV9 video streams can be placed in either Micro$ofts own WMV container or the AVI container!

If you decide to generate WMV9 video streams for the WMV container, then you could use Micro$ofts very own Windows Media Encoder 9 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx). However, if you use this method, you will be limited to using Micro$ofts WMA audio.

If you decide to generate WMV9 video streams for the AVI container, then you will need to install WMV9 VCM (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57114). The advantage of using the AVI container means you are not forced into encoding and using WMA audio. For instance, you could use, MP3, AAC etc, or even keep the VOB's original AC3 stream.

One thing to note... depending on the settings used... both are very slow at generating encodes!

Cheers and good luck

Hi Ziemas,

What are your intentions?

- encode to a WMV file or an AVI file?
- preserve 6 channel audio or just stereo?

If it is a WMV file with WMA9 Professional 5.1 audio:
for 1-pass CBR, preferred guide is:
http://www.microsoftusernetwork.com/zarax/dvd_index.htm
for 2-pass VBR, preferred guide is:
http://www.microsoftusernetwork.com/mcored/02-softhardreq.htm

If it is an AVI file:
Read SeeMoreDigital's reply.

To clear any doubts you have, here are some answers to your questions. :)

Does anyone know of a simple way to encode vob to wmv?
A simple way should be http://www.microsoftusernetwork.com/zarax/dvd_index.htm. It doesn't require anything other than a DVD Decrypter and Windows Media Encoder 9.

Do you need to pay for the privilage of encoding to wmv?
You do not need to pay anything to encode in WMV. You can use Windows Media Encoder 9 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder) for free.

OR does anyone have any ideas on which format to post a short clip on a web site?
If you ever decide to use the AVI container make sure that you use an Audio stream which won't require the users to hunt for the codec. (you said they aren't tech savvy and they will just expect to open the file and play it straightaway).

The target audience is the senior set, and not very tech savvy.
If you have Windows Media Player 10 installed, you might see Windows Media Video 9 Advaned Profile listed in Windows Media Encoder 9. I would suggest you to just use WMV9 and not WMV9 AP as WMV9 AP would require users to download WMP10.

That domain seems to have been abandoned. Is there a new guide for DVD to WMV?
