I'm posting this to save someone else's hair.
DirectX 9.0 -> 9.0b all have the same bug which will screw up PAL DV captures. Microsoft have issued a hotfix: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=d7ac99f4-7a53-4944-9be4-d1ff66cb5882&DisplayLang=en else apparently 9.0c works.
I only found this bug whilst using VirtualDub 1.60 via AVISynth 2.55 and both video eg Xvid & audio eg LAME codecs. The captures were made using ScenealyzerLive 2.1 via Firewire from LP recordings by a different miniDV cam.
It's possible this also highlights a bug in ScenealyzerLive. Unfortunately, Premiere won't let you use your machine whilst capturing (I have approx 24 hours capturing to do) and neither of the free capture programmes worked at all.
