I'd like to get my dad a USB2-based external capture device.

What is the current state of affairs for USB2 capture devices? Are they dependent on proprietary software? Do they have third-party software support? If so, are the USB2 devices standardized in any way, or do third-party programs support only specific products? What do most people use?

I've seen a number of threads but haven't been able to make any real conclusions.

I'd like:
MPEG2 hardware encoder
Support for third-party software
Internal audio capture (i.e., not through the sound card)Nice to have, but not required:
Tuner
PVR capabilities
48 KHz audioThanks!

HUm.. seem a little bit demander on the CPU... How about ADS Tech DVD Express, can capture, SVIDEO/RCA, internal sound capture, hardware encoder and best of all it does not support Grappyvision (macrovision). all for under 100$
