Green screen in preview

I have read some other threads where people have complained of a green screen in preview (either Recode or Shrink). I had the same problem with a Gattaca DVD. Trying to play the disk in Power DVD gave me a message that the disk was unreadable and may be damaged. There were no signs of scratches however.

After some experimentation I found that could get either Smart Ripper or Dvd Decrypter to rip the movie, then use the others to encode. The sticking point was the method of decryption. DVD Decrypt has a CSS option which, by default, is set to I/O key exchage -> Brute Force. I reversed this setting (Brute Force-> I/O key exchange) and it worked fine. Smart ripper seemed to do it automatically but there doesn't seem to be an equivalent option.

I hope this helps other who encounter the green screen.

Yes, the green screen problem is almost always some type of CSS error, or decoding error. It's possible to have a simple read error cause it, due to a scratch or smudge, but that usually causes CRC errors which the drive will detect.

The interesting thing is that the default setting in DVD Decrypter will still decrypt and rip the movie, but instead of the movie being present, the green screen is there instead. Audio, subtitles, menu's etc are still there too! So as far as most rippers are concerned, the process was a success.
